Tribes 2 Tweak Guide

Audio

Now select the Sound tab.

3D Provider. This setting controls the Sound API to be used. Options available being as follows – Creative Labs EAX, Creative Labs EAX 2, DirectSound3D Hardware Support & Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio. Select an appropriate API depending on your system & Soundcard. For best performance set this to Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio, while Creative Labs EAX 2 will provide best 3D Audio quality if supported by your Soundcard. The latest patch for Tribes 2 features added support for Reverb in Underwater & Interior environments when EAX is enabled.

Speakers. Select your speaker setup with this setting as appropriate, be it Surround, 4 Speaker or whatever you have. NOTE – This may interfere with your Speaker selection in the Control Panel, or Driver utility.

Environment Enabled. Changing this option is only available with the selection of Creative Labs EAX/Creative Labs EAX 2 as your 3D Provider. Ticking this setting will enable enhanced audio effects such as Occlusion, which can enhance your audio experience, although can lower performance as a result of the extra resources needed for the effects calculations. I'd recommend leaving this setting Unticked for the vast majority of users out there, unless you have a high enough frame rate to afford enabling this.

Frequency. The frequency controls the quality of audio playback in Tribes 2. Essentially the higher the value is the better quality audio playback will be (Less hissing/static will be noticeable, i.e. Better clarity). 44 KHz is CD quality audio, 22 KHz is optimal for MMX supporting CPU's. You should not consider using 11 KHz unless you have an extremely old Soundcard given the audio degradation.

Bit Rate. The bitrate is another factor in determining audio playback quality. Set this to 16 Bit to enable use of 16-bit sound which gives improved audio quality. A setting of 8 Bit may slightly improve performance a little but will reduces overall audio quality. You should only really try setting this to 8 Bit if you have an old Soundcard.

Channels. Setting this to One will result in Mono playback of audio, while a setting of Two will yield improved Stereo quality audio. You should only really set this to One if you are using a very old Soundcard, or are desperate for a performance increase.

Master Volume. This setting controls the global volume level for audio in Tribes 2. Adjust the slider bar for volume as required, slide the bar Right to increase global volume & vice versa. I'd recommend setting this to the farthest Right.

Effects Volume. Use this to set the effects volume level in Tribes 2. Adjust the slider bar for volume as required, slide the bar Right to increase the effects volume & vice versa.

GUI Volume. Use this to set the GUI (Menu) volume level in Tribes 2. Adjust the slider bar for volume as required, slide the bar Right to increase the GUI volume level & vice versa.

Voice Bind Volume. Use this to set the voice volume level in Tribes 2. Adjust the slider bar for volume as required, slide the bar Right to increase the voice volume & vice versa.

MP3 Music. Untick this to setting to disable the in-game music from playing. This will improve performance, which can be useful on systems with slow CPU/Hard drives (As MP3's require decoding & are streamed from the Hard drive). Leave this setting Unticked to enable the in-game music being played, this serves more as a distraction in Multiplayer games though so you'd be best off leaving this disabled at all times.

Music Volume. Use this to set the volume level for music in Tribes 2. Adjust the slider bar for volume as required, slide the bar Right to increase music volume & vice versa. NOTE – Muting the Music will not affect performance beneficially, you will to disable the MP3 Music for this to happen.

You can find out how to further improve your audio experience in Tribes 2 by checking out our Soundcard/Speaker Tweak guide to setup your soundcard/speakers properly.

Voice

Now select the Voice tab.

Microphone Enabled. Tick this setting to enable real-time voice communications in Tribes 2. While you need not be using a microphone, this will enable you to hear others. I'd recommend leaving this feature disabled (Unticked) unless you have an Internet connection faster than ISDN given the bandwidth requirements of this feature. NOTE – Ensure that you have enabled the Microphone in your Mixer also if you wish to communicate with others using this feature.

Microphone Volume. Use this slider to adjust the Recording volume for your microphone. To find the best value for this you'll want to use the Test Record option a good deal until you find the best trade-off between volume level & static/background noises.

Microphone Input Boost. You can use this slider to adjust the level of volume increase given to any recorded sound. You may want to test different combinations of this setting & the Microphone Volume until you find one that delivers the best clarity audio.

Voice Listen Codec. This setting specifies the Audio codec(s) used for receiving voice recordings from others. Allowing higher quality codecs can degrade your ping times & cause more lag as they require higher amount of network bandwidth to receive. I'd recommend setting this to .v12 – .v24 as a result, you should only really consider .v12 - .v29 if you are on a network (Although if you are then it's probably likely you can just should across at other anyway).

Voice Send Codec. This setting controls the Audio codec used for recording, & transmitting voice recordings from you. Allowing higher quality codecs can degrade your ping times & create higher lag as they require progressively higher amount of network bandwidth to send/receive. I'd recommend setting this to .v12 or .v24 as a result.
