0x00007b from a virus?

I have this error 0x00007b and i cant do anything on my computer just the blue screen of death. I have windows XP professional. Anyway how it all started was my computer started messing up and claiming everything was a virus notepad.exe and every thing i tried to do so i shut the computer off and tried to turn it back on 0x00007b i tried everything running it in safe mode blue screen, disc recovery mode or what ever that is called blue screen and im just wondering is this something im gonna have to reformat everything on my hard drive and reinstall my OS or is this something i can fix without losing all my data?
