I suggest, you uninstall Kaspersky temporarily (just for testing purposes), using this tool: http://support.kasperskyamericas.com/knowledge-base-article/1464
Turn Windows firewall on.
See, how it goes.

I can't uninstall it, I don't have the original install discs to reinstall it or the key. They don't belong to me. I was able to turn it off, that should be as effective as it not starting.

With some elaborate programs, it may not be enough.
As you experienced already, FF in computer's safe mode seems to be doing fine.

Do you have same lag in some other browser, like IE?

Try to create new FF profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager and see, if you got same thing.

IE doesn't have the lag. The new Firefox profile seems to be lag free for the most part. Pages take a few seconds to load. If that is normal for fairly fast computers, then I am fine. The keystroke lag seems to be gone in the new FF profile as well. The problem is the addons and extentions I have in FF causing lag. thx again

I'm not 100% sure, if this is add-ons issue, because you started FF in FF's safe mode (no add-ons) and apparently, you still had a lag.
Your profile may be corrupted.
In any case, you can try to disable all add-ons, restart FF and see how it goes.
