Chrome OS isn't the most attractive operating system for a power user, but that hasn't stopped it being somewhat successful in low-cost laptops. Where Chrome OS is yet to make an impact, though, is in the all-in-one desktop market, which has been dominated by Windows and Mac OS X products for many years.

Acer is hoping to change this with the launch of a new Chromebase, the all-in-one equivalent of a Chromebook. There haven't been too many products in this category before, though Acer believes that its Chromebase - the first with a touchscreen - will continue the company's dominance in the Chrome OS market.

The simply-named Acer Chromebase is a 21.5-inch 1080p all-in-one desktop powered by an ARM-based Nvidia Tegra K1 SoC. Unfortunately this isn't the all new Tegra X1 chip that Nvidia launched earlier this year, though the quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU with a 192 CUDA core Kepler GPU should be powerful enough for typical Chrome OS tasks.

Other specifications include up to 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage with 100 GB of free Google Drive to go with it, two 3W speakers, and a typical range of connectivity including USB 3.0 and 2.0, HDMI and Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n.

Acer hasn't announced a price for their Chromebase just yet, but considering the price point most Chrome OS devices launch at, expect it to be reasonably cheap. The Chromebase will go on sale during the second quarter of this year.
