Hello again. back in December I posted regarding adware.generic being found by AVG scan when nothing is found by kasper sky. it is found in the c:\\ PROGRAM FILES (86)\WOWNODE\AVG\CURRENTVERSION\AVP. This looks almost identical to the last time. I was told last time that the windows operating code had been currupted Bruno was the person who had helped me he is a malware annihilator. if he could help me again and tell me if he looks like the last problem i would appreciate it. It makes me think AVG is unleashing the adware with their free AVG trial downloads because thats the only time I've ever ran into this problem. Furthermore I have tried to perform System restore and it says that it can't be completed because a avg program is running. Despite that I removed avg with the windows program remover and disabled my kaspersky. It gives me an unspecified error every time I try to do restore now which I have had no problem doing restores up until now . Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be glad to help you. But please follow the steps in the Preliminary Virus and Malware Removal thread HERE.

When you have finished, leave the logs for review in your next reply .
NOTE: Logs must be pasted in the replies. Attached logs will not be reviewed.

Please do not use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you, unless I direct you to. Do not use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.

I will also take a look at your previous thread.

Dustin, I reviewed your entire thread from Dec. 2010: https://www.techspot.com/vb/topic157733.html

You had some problem following the directions that were set up and some uncertainties about the log contents. But your system was cleaned at that point>>>>however>>>>>>

You had 3 antivirus programs running: AVG, Kaspersky (which you said you paid for) and Symantec. The restore points show this:
RP53: 12/7/2010 2:15:04 PM - Removed AVG 2011
RP54: 12/7/2010 2:16:39 PM - Removed AVG 2011

However, when you made the comment about c:\\ PROGRAM FILES (86)\WOWNODE\AVG\CURRENTVERSION\AVP. then you were clearly told and I quote:
Broni: " This is how dumb AVG is.
AVP is a part of Kaspersky."

In spite of that, you are now here saying the same thing. This entry is not adware, it's not malware.

I can help with the redirects, but they have nothing to do with the entry you keep quoting. Let's work on that with the new logs. Kaspersky is a good piece of software. When you get a problem, downloading another antivirus program to see if it will 'catch' the cause of the problem is not the way to go!

If you would like help again, you will need to go through those same scans and please note> all of the cleaning tools were set up for removal. However, if you did not remove them, you should do so now. Get the current versions and run new scans.

The HKLM file you are referring to is a Registry entry. IT is a legitimate entry from Kaspersky.

I do not advise doing a System Restore at this point. If AVG was removed correctly, it shouldn't be on the system to find anything!

As for this:
Kaspersky Anti-Virus (which i pay for), spy doctor 2010 (Free virus), and malbytes failed to pick up this file which avg free trail picks up every time
The other 3 programs didn't 'pick this up' because it isn't malware! You are 'assuming' the since AVG did, that it's malware. No, it's a False Positive- something that AVG is famous for@!! Be advised>> never assume!

why does it continue to say I can't do system restore

Thanks for reviewing my previous post. When he posted what you quoted I must have misunderstood what he meant. But ever since I removed avg from my computer using windows uninstall program option it won't allow me to do a system restore any more. it claims that its do to an anti virus still running. i've disabled kaspersky to see if it works but it still will not do system restores at all each time claiming that its an unspecified error and is proably do to an anti virus running. However before I downloaded the avg this time I had no problems doing system restores . Kaspersky did not return any threats at all by the way.

Doing a System Restore has nothing to do with the antivirus program running.

If you want me to help you, please follow the steps in the thread I left in Reply #2..

The ESET online scanner did not have a log I could copy and past although I looked through a search like you told me to do. There was no option to copy to clip board. Although the I scanned my computer twice with it... there were no threats found. If you would like me to do it again I will..... I just did not see any way to post a log that it did not have there

No problem- as long as nothing was found, it sometimes does not generate a log.

You still have some AVG:
Please run this Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
[2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
[3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap'> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:Be sure to scroll down to include ALL lines.
Code:
KillAll::
File::
Folder::
c:\programdata\AVG10
c:\program files (x86)\AVG
c:\windows\system32\%APPDATA%
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt . I do not need this log.
====================
There is no evidence of malware on the system.
======================
Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.
  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Click on Start> right click on Computer> Properties
  • Select System Protection
  • Click on the Create button (near bottom)
  • Type a name for the Restore Point
  • Click on Create again to save the restore point.
  • Deleting all but the most recent System Protection point in Windows 7
  • Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter.
  • Click Disk Cleanup from there.
    image2.png
  • Click Clean up system files
This restarts Disk Cleanup to run in elevated mode.
  • Click the More Options tab
    w7-srp2.png
  • Click the Clean up under System Restore and Shadow Copies.
  • Click OK.
  • You will get a confirmation screen> Just click Delete.
  • Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
  • Click Delete Files on the Confirmation screen.
image6.png

It will run the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)

======================================
If you still have a problem with System Restore, please tell me exactly what happens when you attempt either setting a restore point or do a System Restore.

You should be able to type System Restore into the Start Menu's search box> Enter> then you can choose whether to set a new restore point or do a System Restore.

I followed everything you posted in your last reply. I do have a question should I attempt to do a system restore now with the new restore point I created to see if it works again now? I appreciate all your time and patience

Create one more restore point first. Name it Test. Try to restore to that one. Let me know.

it worked!

I did as you told me and created a test restore point. It worked! So I take it now my problem is solved? My computer seems to be reacting a lot quicker since all your help. If there is anything else you would like me to do let me know. I appreciate all your time, cooperation and patience! Thank you soooooo much

You're welcome! The system is clean. Here are some tips to help keep it that way:

Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
[o] Safe Settings (Please ignore the suggestion to use the Registry Editior in this section "Creating a Custom Security Zone")
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o] [o]Avast-Free Antivirus
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
[o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
