Age of Empires II not playing after installation

I'm trying to play Age of Empires II on my newer-er laptop. I installed it just fine, no problems. When I try to open the game to play, I get the loading screen and the disk sounds like it's running, but it just stops and my computer says "Age of Empires II has stopped working" and something about checking for a solution to the problem. It never finds a solution though.

I just finished installing and running it on our desktop (also Vista) and it worked just fine, so it's not the disk. I have no idea what the heck to do. Help please!

What are your laptop specs? Perhaps it doesn't meet the minimum specifications for the game. If it does meet game requirements, is the game patched?
