A few months ago we reported on developer Koushik Dutta's AllCast Android application -- otherwise known as AirCast. The app allowed users to stream local video and audio content directly to Chromecast from their device's gallery, Dropbox or Google Drive. Although it was subsequently blocked by Google, Dutta has continued his work on the app and is now announcing support for a bunch of other devices.
Currently in beta and available for download from the Google Play Store, AllCast can now stream content to the Apple TV, Roku, Xbox (360 or One), Samsung Smart TVs, and other DLNA-compatible devices.
The app is very easy to operate. Once installed, a "cast" button appears in top right corner of open videos or photos. Tapping on it triggers a list of devices available on the home network and streaming will begin as soon as a device is selected. In case you're wondering, no, you don’t have to root your phone to get the app working.
As mentioned above, AllCast is the brainchild of ClockworkMod developer Koushik Dutta, and though it was originally written for Chromecast, Google’s $35 streamer is notably absent from the list. That may change in the future though as the company is currently readying the Cast SDK.
One major limitation at the moment is that AllCast doesn’t support videos from streaming services -- only local content as well content from Dropbox and Google Drive. In order to test drive the beta version, you’ll have to first join the ClockworkMod Beta Testers community on Google+ and then download the app from Google Play.
