AMD Tried to Hide This: FSR 4 Upscaling Already Works on Older Radeon GPUs

As consumers we have to stop pretending a company can be perfect and profitable enough to survive the market. I think AMD already does a lot for the community and they need we buy their new stuff and you are right marking that doing this is a nasty behaviour, I'm just saying cuz people ultra demonize just for stuff like this being done 1% the times Intel or Nvidia have already done it...

Hi Tim, I've been using FSR4 on my steam deck injected using Decky Framegen and honestly it's made some games much better in image quality and having a 10-30% boost depending on using Quality to Performance. I've mainly tested it on Uncharted 4. Definitely helps maintain 40fps on the more open levels (when you get the jeep) where I'd be getting 33-35fps at medium settings at native res, turning fsr4 on via DLSS quality in the options gets it to around 39-42fps, balance hits around 45fps and performance gets around 48fps. Obviously these figures aren't massive gains but if it helps maintain a more solid frame rate paired with a frame cap then the gameplay becomes massively smoother. Also 30fps looks godawful to my eyes now why 40fps is a lot smoother to the eye as a good middle ground. I play GTA IV on steam deck at 45fps and feels close to 60 whilst getting a decent battery life.

Keep up the hard work Tim, look forward to more upscaling investigations.

That’s pretty exciting if AMD can get FSR 4 running smoothly on older GPUs, that’s a huge win for longevity and accessibility. INT8 support on RDNA 2 and 3 could really boost performance without sacrificing too much image quality. If it gets anywhere close to full FSR 4 quality, that’s going to breathe new life into a ton of older cards. Can’t wait to see real-world benchmarks and comparisons once it’s officially out.

Today, after some year of saving, I treated myself to Gigabyte M32UP (on Mr.Schiesser recommendation), and first game to test was Cyberpunk2077 with that DLL copied.
I have to say, with FSR4, on 7900XTX @4K, with RT reflections on, game looks really nice, with mostly 60/70fps, and relatively smooth +45fps around Your main household plaza.

Nice.

Oh noes the realization that those who run AMD aren't benefactors but only in it for Hard-Cash-at-Any Cost will likely kill a lot of hardcore fanboys!

Lighten up people it's a joke!

As it is, it can't really be used properly. They need to try and improve the FSR INT8 performance by a few percent to make it viable.

FSR still behaves weirdly at the moment. They say that FSR 3 requires a 5000 series AMD gpu and I cannot remember Nvidia. Think it is 1070TI and higher. Now I did not test this thoroughly yet as I am not a massive gamer cause off work. One game I had to get was Titan Quest 2. I had an I5 3340 with a 1050ti.

Game was sluggish as hell. Enabled FSR3 and I almost had constant 60fps. Upgraded to an R5 5500 two weeks ago but with the same gpu for now. Need to retest it. Still, according to AMD the 1050TI is too weak, yet it gives performance uplift even on a weak gpu like this. It may be game dependant though. Need to test this on a few more games to see the results. In Titan Quest 2 I did try the other upscaling cept for DLSS which I can't test and all of them had performance issues. Only FSR 3 made noticable difference.

As a user already said, AMD isn't selling too little, they're producing too little, hence the low numbers. Consumer products aren't going to be more affordable anytime soon as AI is absorbing all the most recent tech.

As market leaders with 94% of the gpu's sold, AMD can afford to be lazy and not offer compelling features. Ooh wait what, no that's not right.

Thanks Tim for the article.

It takes dedication to convert the content from your video review (from Hardware Unboxed) of FSR 4 for older Radeon GPU into a compelling article like this.

I get what you're saying, and I do agree AMD generally gives a lot back to the community, open standards like FSR are a great example. But that’s exactly why people are frustrated about FSR4 possibly not working on older GPUs. It’s not about demanding perfection, it’s about consistency with the values AMD built their image on ... openness and broad support.

If they start gating features like Nvidia does, they risk losing that goodwill that sets them apart.

People aren’t ultra demonizing, they’re just holding AMD to the same standard AMD set for themselves.

Just tried it in Ghost of Tshushima, where the difference is really striking! Image is much sharper overall. Same in Ratchet and Clank, the difference is impressive, you're right, returning to FSR 3 is "not an option"! In Cyberpunk it also works perfectly, and I still get 100+ FPS on my 7900XTX.
I will install it in my other games too, with just the DLL, like in Ghost of Tsushima (you don't need optiscaler with this one), or with optiscaler.
That's very good!
Thanks AMD for this "release"... hope it is official soon!
