Great work. Does anyone know if fsr 4.1 is compatible with rdna 3.5 ( handhelds)?

FSR 2 and 3.x has been garbage from day one and still is. This is the main reason why AMD GPU users - who can't use FSR 4 - hates upscaling. FSR 2/3 is THAT BAD.

FSR 1 was pure trash, just like DLSS 1.
Blurry garbage both of them, hence not worth mentioning + incompatible with DLSS2/FSR2 and newer (dll replacing)

DLSS has been worth using since version 2 from 2020, almost 7 years ago now.
Today, there is an insane amount of support with DLSS 2+ and DLSS 4 can literally be used in all of these games. DLSS 4 = Best upscaler today, by far.

When DLSS is supported, DLAA is too - and this is for people who wants top tier image quality and nothing else. Destroys regular "native" with some crappy AA slapped on top. NoAA looks crap even at 4K/UHD+

If games don't support DLSS, you can use DLDSR on Nvidia RTX. Makes non-DLSS games look like remasters, downsampling like 4K on a 1080p monitor = Jawdropping improvements with minor perf hit. DLDSR = VSR but much better and with less issues.

Pretty much all newer games have DLSS support today tho. DLDSR can be used in conjunction with DLSS/DLAA tho.

4K downsampled to 1080p with DLSS enabled on a 1080p monitor will make your JAW DROP compared to regular 1080p om that same monitor. Night vs day difference in visuals but in terms of framerate, they will be similar. DLSS Performance mode at 4K is 1080p internally.


With FSR 4 AMD finally delivered decent upscaling but Nvidia still holds the crown, in terms of everyhing:

1. Visuals
2. Motion
3. Support

Hoping to see FSR 5 with RDNA 5 / UDNA.

When it comes to FEATURES, AMD still is years behind and have tons of work to do.
Lets go AMD. RDNA 5/UDNA next year. FSR 5. Go.

AMD have 18.5% GPU marketshare on Steam but half that is iGPUs and APUs. Weak hardware. AMD dGPU marketshare, 10% tops. With Nvidia holding the rest - oh, and Intel with a 1% marketshare too.

FSR 4 to RDNA 3.5 when tho?

FSR was a great way to extend the life of my GTX 1080Ti and FSR 4.1 will help keep my 7800XT going for the next couple of years at least. Had many years of gaming without paying the nVidia RTX tax and will continue for a few more. Shame AMD took so long to officially release it - hopefully won't be too long that 6000 series owners get a bit of FSR 4.1 love.

From what I found, it is not, since these chips do not have enough performance left to actually make a difference. Running FSR4.1 with INT8 could actually lower the FPS. This is only on the ones running on 890m iGPU.
I would assume Strix Halo based chips would be able to pull this off, but that market is so small that AMD probably does not want to commit its devs time on that.

But my elite gamer, have you forgotten that DLSS1 sucked, too? DLSS2 was considered a revolution but is now looked down on.
 
AMD really let the mask slip. They could have just said they were working on a INT8 implementation and people would have been happy. Instead they denied denied denied, pretended it couldn't run when it did, and pissed their community off for over a year.

This was entirely self inflicted.

That makes no sense, the rx 6400 is weaker and sees benefits.

In reality: 3.5 is fully capable at running far 4.1 int8, and predictably modders have gotten it working. It is AMD stonewalling it, as always.
 
I guess it's a blessing in disguise that I can't really tell the difference between any two versions of FSR when gaming, even compared to native rendering - and that's on a 32" 4k OLED. I can barely tell the difference in the images above which are magnified several times over. It makes me wonder if people sit in front of their screens with a magnifying glass griping about how bad this or that detail looks, rather than just playing a game and enjoying it.

Great article and in-depth video as always Tim. Will be interesting to see how it performs on RX 6000 cards in the near future.

Took AMD 6 more years to bring FSR 4 out. Their first decent upscaler.

DLSS 4 is still the best upscaler today, with vastly broader support than FSR 4.

DLSS 2 was never looked down on, only by AMD GPU and Nvidia GTX owners maybe - DLSS 2 brought the magic and RTX users have been using DLSS for years as it just kept improved more and more. Or enabled DLAA for maximum visuals.

Also, FSR 4 is still not supported on RDNA 1 and 2, along with RDNA 3.5 iGPUs.
Meanwhile all RTX GPUs, even 2000 series from 10 years ago, fully supports DLSS 4. Because Nvidia had a plan from day one, when RTX went live, AMD did not have any plan outside of rasterization performance till RDNA 4.

RDNA 1 and 2 dated like milk compared to RTX 2000 and 3000.
Even RDNA 3 aged badly, luckily finally got FSR 4 now.

Also FSR 4.1 was initially exclusive to rdna4 and now rdna3 hardware but not their rdna3.5 hardware that is still being sold. AMD never loses an opportunity to lose an opportunity. Meanwhile Intel is eating AMD'S lunch in the handheld and leapfrogged them already in frame gen, upscaling and hardware in the handheld gaming space.

I've been using it on a Radeon 780m MiniPC for a few days with Optiscaler and it works very well, however I'm running at ~50W so I don't know how that will translate to a ~25W handheld.

I've been running at 1080p with FSR 4.1.1 Quality on a 22" 1080p monitor and the quality is very good with much improved AA compared to native and much improved stability compared to FSR 2/3, the very reasons I got Optiscaler to run. FPS is also up vs native so it's an improvement all around.

The closest DLSS I can compare to is DLSS 4.0 on an RTX 3050 6GB on a (similar but better) 1080p monitor and DLSS 4 has somewhat better IQ, but that system is also more GPU capable though less CPU capable using ~120W CPU+GPU to deliver higher framerates but worse frametimes (the CPU limitation).

Overall FSR 4.1.1 on the Radeon 780m is a *BIG* improvement in all the important metrics of AA, image stability, and improved FPS. Looking forward to the official release whenever AMD can be bothered to do so.
 
Man, you guys really overblown the visual differences between the two. Is 4.1 better? Yes, is it a million times better as the article leads you to believe? Definitely not. AI upscaling is AI upscaling, nothing beats native visuals and it never will. There’s flaws in every one.
Tell that to the first commenters praising DLSS as a miracle (when in fact it's just fake frames and upscaled images).

This is what happens when mediocre people consent to mediocre products.
