Americans are losing enthusiasm for their jobs, with AI and remote workers at the center of the decline

In a nutshell: Do you feel a lack of enthusiasm for your job, or struggle with motivation and focus at work? If you do, then you're in the majority. A recent poll of the US workforce found that employee engagement in Q3 fell to its lowest level since 2011. Much of the decline came from remote and hybrid employees across the country, especially those in organizations that have adopted AI.

Gallup began tracking employee engagement in 2000, when 26% of employees in the US said they were engaged. That figure stayed steady between 26% and 30% through 2013, then climbed to a peak of 36% in 2020.

But engagement has fallen since the start of the decade. It stood at 29% last quarter, the lowest level in 15 years. It's also two percentage points lower than the previous quarter.

Gallup writes that each percentage point in engagement represents approximately 1.6 million US employees. The Q3 decline is equivalent to about 3.2 million fewer engaged workers, bringing the total decrease since 2020 to approximately 11 million.

The decline reflected two aspects of employees' work experience: knowing what is expected of them and feeling cared about as a person.

Gallup says businesses should care more about their employees' morale, as disengaged workers can impact a firm's productivity, customer service, quality, safety and profitability.

Interestingly, employees' understanding of what was expected of them declined around twice as much among hybrid and fully remote workers. Jim Harter, chief scientist for Gallup's workplace management and wellbeing practices, suggests this could be due to physical distances contributing to psychological distance between employees and their organizations, especially as companies introduce AI at work.

AI's engagement advantage – the higher employee engagement seen in organizations that integrate AI --narrowed for remote and hybrid employees to just two percentage points in Q3, while remaining around four to five points for on-site workers.

Gallup's bottom line is that AI adoption may be outpacing the communication and managerial support needed to make it effective. It recommends clarifying AI expectations, strengthening manager support – especially for distributed teams – and tracking AI's impact on productivity and engagement.

Today's workplace is turbulent, to say the least. In addition to the AI-driven layoffs, many employees feel so pressured to adopt AI that they're pretending to use it to impress bosses – usually because they aren't confident that they can use it effectively.

Businesses might argue that AI cuts costs and saves them money. But a new Gartner survey found that was true for just 3% of organizations. Despite this, 85% still plan to spend more on the technology.

I feel the same, with price of living getting crazy expensive. Salary increases that's laughable. AI causing concern over Job security. Bosses that's disconnected from reality. I mean what is there to be excited about.

Playing the same game the boss is playing now. I just don't care anymore.

I don't think Americans have anything to feel enthusiastic about in this context. Everything is getting worse and there's still tons of people that want it to get worse yet just so things don't get better for the people the news told them to hate.

Impossible to be enthusiastic when we have a demented old man who rapes girls and sh!ts his pants while giving speeches on live TV, when so many people are still saying they want more of this.

We also all know the system is highly rigged at this point and it's very unlikely to get better.

Hopefully if Democrats win the House and Senate mid-terms only if, we might see A.I getting properly regulated in which people can feel protected with their jobs.

Make no mistake, if Republican stay in power there will be a lot more job losses, with the rich only getting richer replacing workers with A.I.

Won't happen.

Republicans have gotten so good at stopping dems from ever being able to make progress on anything. Dems could be trying feed starving children and Republicans would stop it, and convince people to hate the children for being hungry in the first place.

Even if the Trump era fully ends, the system and people who enabled it will still be here.

The only thing that might save us is if there is a blue wave and the new admin actually starts arresting all the Epstien pedophiles, as well as anyone else who tried to help trump skew election results. But that will never happen. The system is too corrupt to self correct now, that will be Trumps legacy.

Sadly you are right...the current administration and the Republican voters are rotten to the core,...but I'm not losing hope that with Democrats winning both chambers and putting many Republicans in jail for their high levels of corruption and criminal intent, the rest of us can finally return to normalcy some time in the future.

Smaller teams are living like rockstars right now with the new tools providing increased freedom for those with the authority to design and implement unilaterally. Larger teams with more specialized roles are shaken as numbers perpetually worsen for all but those at rhe very top, with the rest constrained to serve under the yoke of greed and justify their roles.

To the boomers... I'd just say to keep voting because you certainly know how to put on a show, even if the rest of us are footing the bill for you later. The world I was born into no longer tolerates the graces they had on their way to the top, but shutting the door behind them has become their signature move over the past several decades.

HAHAHAHA WHAT A BUNCH OF DELUDED PENIS WAFFLES... I love ''research posts'' where straw picks using one or two things somehow magically determine the ENTIRE industries issues.

its simple-
people want a living wage, dont pay that? no loyalty..
people want heath care coverage, , dont pay that? no loyalty..
people want managers that take responsibility for staff issues, dont have that? no loyalty..
people want to work normal hours and not be guilt tripped by nepo-babies in to working longer hours for same pay, cant do that, no loyalty..
people want real accreditation training, dont provide that? no loyalty..

so all in all this is as normal for the last 25 years all the fault of leadership. but lets blame the people whom which run everything to make it work.

Delete your bosses, the world will be a better place.
