Apple on Friday posted a frequently asked questions page about the transition from MobileMe to iCloud, clearing up confusion about what will happen with existing MobileMe accounts, and revealing that some services will remain accessible via the web -- not only on iOS devices like the iPhone or iPad as it was previously speculated.
Apple notes that mail, contacts, calendar, bookmarks, Find My iPhone, and Back to My Mac will all be available in iCloud. Users of those services in MobileMe will be able to transition them over and continue using them at icloud.com this fall.
On the other hand, three services now available to MobileMe customers -- iWeb publishing, Gallery and iDisk -- won’t make their way into iCloud but will continue working through June 30, 2012 even after moving your account to iCloud. Apple has posted instructions on how users can save their data to migrate this information elsewhere.
The company also confirmed you'll be able to buy storage beyond the free 5GB included in every iCloud account when it launches, though it did not provide pricing details. In the meantime MobileMe users who wish to cancel their plan can do so and receive a refund for the unused portion of their subscription. You can read the complete details here.
Apple's iCloud will serve as a backup and synchronization platform for Apple devices. All your contacts, calendar, mail, documents, photos, music, books, and apps will be automatically uploaded to your iCloud account and pushed to any Mac or iOS device associated with that account. It will also augment the functionality of iTunes by offering access to previously purchased music across your hardware, and introduce an optional $24.95 a year service called "iTunes Match," which will let you import non-iTunes songs and download them across all your devices.
