Apple insiders leak that iPhone 14 will bring back Touch ID via 'in-screen' fingerprint...

Your claim that the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is inaccurate is utter nonsense. Even if you only register your finger in one orientation, it will easily detect your fingerprint no matter what orientation you apply your finger on the sensor after that.
I said nothing of orientation. I said it rarely works and works even less with a screen protector

It works every time for me. No exception. It's a brilliant fingerprint reader. The fact that it's sonic based and not light based also means it's safer than any of the optical scanners and less susceptible to light interference on bright and sunny days.
In my humble opinion, it is the most brilliant phone lock out there for convenience and the security is sufficient enough to make it extremely unlikely you'll ever get hacked.
You need supported screen protectors if you insist on using that. If you put one on after you've registered your unlock, simply re-register it and it'll work just fine. That said, Gorilla Glass Victus is pretty scratch resistant, so I'd never even consider using a screen protector to reduce the image quality of the best mobile phone screen ever made. To me, that's like buying the Mona Lisa and putting it in a plastic bag on the wall.
