Apple’s new iPhone X is slated for release on November 3. At a starting price of $999, the handset is redefining the flagship category but the high cost of entry isn’t deterring everyone.

Prospective iPhone X owners are already lining up outside Apple retail stores around the world (and some have already been waiting for days). At Apple’s Palo Alto store, for example, there were already nine people in line as of yesterday.

Apple previously stated that it’ll have handsets available for walk-in customers on launch day. Given the seemingly high demand for the phone and countless rumors of production delays, however, the iPhone X will likely be in short supply. Pre-orders, if you recall, sold out within minutes.

Shipping dates for the iPhone X on Apple’s website have slipped to 5-6 weeks as of writing.

Those hoping to score an iPhone X on launch day can also check with local wireless carrier stores and retailers like Best Buy, Walmart and Target. Third-party sites like eBay are a popular choice as well although be prepared to pay a premium for not having to wait in line.

If you’re still on the fence, I’d recommend checking out our recent review round-up for feedback on the device from early reviewers. Most praised the phone’s OLED display and its camera setup but were a bit skeptical about Face ID.

Statistically, that's only a fraction of people, within the same area, that are mentally ill.

Kind of makes you feel good they choose to congregate somewhere away from you.

The Walking Dead series should feature an Apple store to show those folks still queuing.

Some people are there actually to buy then resell for higher value, it's like you make $500-1000 over night. Especially if you're the first one in the line guaranteed you'll make the news on major TV channels, hi mom! Regardless it's quite fun to watch people going crazy over a smartphone.

Helen Mann Tweets (?) "The start of the line at the Apple Store in Meatpacking. district."

Have I got news for you darlin', you're not really in the "meat packing district", until you're inside the store.

Unfortunately, once inside the store, it's usually too late to pull up your pants and get the hell out of there...:D

Don't these people have some sort of life to lead or better things to do other than camping out on the pavement.

It is amazing how many people will stand in line for a $1K phone that does the same thing as a $450 iphone.

And people say the economy has not recovered....How many of these people you want to bet are the same millennials who complain they cant afford to move out because of the job market?

I genuinely don't pay attention to apple's lineup because it irritates the hell out of people when they wave the phone in front of me and I say oh right, it's like some old iphone?

Ask yourself: If the clerks in Apple stores are called geniuses, what are the customers?
