Apple's first foldable iPhone tipped to feature 7.8-inch display, A20 Pro chip, and 48MP cameras

Digital goods can sell for 20 or 100X more.

Again Price is determined by the value to the customer not the cost to the seller.

That's why people will pay more for a beer at a bar than the grocery store and even more at a stadium during an event. The cost is the same. The value to the customer is different.

That's why people will pay $500 for Harrison Ford's signature but only $5 for mine. The cost is the same. The value to the customer is different.
They'd sell MORE and make MORE profit, if they dropped the price a bit too!

Do people want folding phones? I have no interest in them, and I have never heard anyone express they care about them either.

The trade off of having a much more durable, lighter, and thinner phone for way less money seems to be a no-brainer to everyone.
Yes, believe it or not some people do want a folding phone. It's not about brains, but personal preference.

I started with the Z fold 3 and now I have the Z fold 6. I have no desire to go back to a regular slab. The screen real estate when you want it (it's not mandatory to open it every time) is worth every penny to me.

It's a little thicker and heavier, but still fits easily into the pocket. Can't say that about a tablet.

No, they wouldn't. Sell more units initially yes, but for less profit at a lower price. Then they would lose sales to people that want a premium product. There is a reason companies want to be a premium seller if they can.

Further, the skills, processes, etc. to be premium and to be cheap are completely different. Walmart is ready to sell a cheap phone, Apple is not.

So, you are saying that people would RATHER pay a HIGHER price for a product, just because it is expensive, so they can call it "premium"?
That makes no sense

Mercedes starts selling all their cars cheaper than Hyundia. Poor people rejoice and go by them en mass (for next to no profits since they are so cheap) richer people that want to show off move on to BMW and Porche because now “it’s for poors”.

Human psychology often drives economics.

Heck people pay way more for t shirts with the right logo on it. This shouldn’t be news.

I have no interest in a folding iPhone whatsoever.
It'll be nothing more than a status symbol.
What I want is a new iPhone with 2TB storage.

iTards have been waiting years for Apple to "invent" the foldable phone, finally they will soon have their wishes fulfilled. Samesung who?

For those saying "who wants one"... well Samsung seems to be selling many of them. I do not like the creased screen aspect of them or the thickness. I cannot see myself purchasing one as I rarely use a cellphone and use the tablet instead for general purpose browsing. With that said, they are engineering marvels. One feature I really like about the foldables is being able to fold it partially into an L on a table instead of having to have some type of stand. Let the companies innovate and if they are profitable then great. People questioned the need tablets at first myself being one pf them. Fast forward a few years and my tablet has replaced almost all of my desktop use. I could not live without it. People questioned why we needed an iPhone when we already had the Blackberry. Fast forward and the original smartphone design was revolutionary.

Samsung's latest is basically the same thickness as a regular phone so that aspect is essentially solved but the crease remains.

I can see why some people will love these (I prefer doing most computing on a laptop/desktop rather than phone/tablet).

What will be interesting is to see how many of those people can stomach the $2K price (from both Samsung and Apple).

It's called a Veblen good and it's not a new idea.

It works on an inverse scale, to the logic of the cost-conscious buyer. Most people, including myself, buy things based on value proposition, meaning "how much am I getting, for my money?"

Veblen goods are the opposite: their utility comes purely from cost and scarcity. Being more expensive IS the point, because being able to buy something most people cannot hope to afford and not be bothered by the price tag, is proof that "you've made it". It's a Status Symbol. They'd actually be less valuable, if they went down in price, because then they'd be more common and thus, less valuable.

If, when you first look at an item, you focus on "affordability", you are NOT the target audience.
