Asus has announced a new ultra-slim notebook that appears determined to tackle Lenovo's recently launched IdeaPad U260. The company says its new U36 notebook is the world's thinnest with a standard-voltage Intel Core i3 or i5 processor. The machine is said to measure only 0.74 inches thick or 0.04 inches more than the U260. However, Lenovo uses ULV processors which we assume require less cooling apparatus and can afford a slightly trimmer chassis. The U36 is also a tad heavier at 1.44kg versus 1.38kg.

This is cool for people in need of great mobility, especially having multiple companies competing in the same sector, helps drive down prices and improves availability. Personally, I am a desktop user all the way, so this doesn't change anything for me, although I do know some relatives who would appreciate the thin form factor and light weight. I am very interested to see what battery life actually turns out to be. I can't imagine a 4 cell battery lasting a laptop 8 to 10 hours, just not possible IMO.

Finally someone takes the "Thinnest" away from the Macbook Airtards. Hopefully it won't be a slug like the Air was either.
