Asus has updated its Zenbook line of premium thin-and-light laptops with a new aluminum-clad ultrabook which the company showcased at IFA today. Dubbed UX305, the 13.3-inch laptop is just less than half an inch thick (0.48 inches) and weighs a mere 2.65 pounds.
One of the most compelling features of the ultrabook is its 3,200x1,800 high-resolution display, which packs in 267 pixels-per-inch (PPI). Other features include Intel’s new low-power Core M “Broadwell” processor, 8GB of RAM, HDMI output, 3 USB ports, a headset jack, and an SD card reader.
The UX305 runs Windows 8.1, and will ship with either a 128GB or 256GB solid-state drive. It connects to the Web via dual-band 802.11 Wi-Fi, and the company says the laptop should get over 10 hours of battery life.
Folks at Cnet, who got a chance to check it out at IFA's showfloor, say the laptop is a fingerprint magnet, which means that you'll have to wipe it clean quite often.
Asus' new laptop will be available in black and white color options that the company's product manager Derek Yu claims were inspired by obsidian and ceramic, respectively. As for price and availability, unfortunately the company hasn't set those in stone yet, although with the kind of specs it has, it likely won't come cheap.
In another IFA announcement, netbooks are set to make a comeback with the revival of the Asus Eee brand name. The new EeeBook X205 aims to compete with budget Chromebooks at the $199 price point. The 11.6-inch laptop will be powered by an Intel Atom Z3735 Bay Trail processor, just 2GB RAM, 32GB or 64GB SSD -- plus an offer of 100GB Onedrive cloud storage -- and a basic 1366 x 768 screen. The new EeeBook will use a fanless design and run for 12 hours on battery.
Like the budget conscious Windows tablets that we covered earlier today, the EeeBook runs Windows 8.1 with Bing.
