AT&T has announced its first branded tablet, what it’s calling the Trek HD. It’s an 8-inch, mid-range slate set to go on sale nationwide starting May 12 online and May 15 in stores.

The Trek HD’s 8-inch display operates at a resolution of 1,280 x 800 and is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 ticking along at 1.6GHz alongside 1GB of RAM. The LTE-enabled tablet includes 16GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card slot), a 5-megapixel rear-facing autofocus camera and a front-facing 2-megapixel shooter.

You’ll also get 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB connectivity. It’ll arrive running Android 5.0 Lollipop with a 4,060mAh battery keeping everything up and running for up to eight hours on a single charge. The slate measures 8.35” x 4.95” x 0.35” and tips the scales at 12 ounces.

It’s interesting that AT&T is only now releasing a branded tablet instead of doing so when tablets were more popular. Sales have started to cool over the past several quarters as the market reaches its saturation point. What’s more, tablet users on average don’t update their devices as often as they do smartphones, resulting in fewer sales overall.

The nation’s second largest wireless provider is offering the Trek HD through a couple of different options. Customers can get the tablet for $49.99 with a two-year service agreement or pay $10 per month for 20 months through an installment plan. The slate can be added to a new or existing Mobile Share Value plan for $10 per month.
