Audio not working - Code 10

When my computer got infected with a virus (or something?) one of the symptoms was fluctuating volume and random clicks. My friend thought it made sense to disable the sound card and did so. Now I have no sound. I got some help here to get rid of the virus but have not been able to restore the sound.

I have tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling from the original CD. It installs okay but gives the error that the device is not working properly. In device manage it says "This device cannot start (Code 10)

OS is Windows XP version 2002 Svce pk 3

Driver is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

driver date 9/5/2007 version 5.10.5607.0

I see that others have had this same problem but I am only seeing it on Vista machines.

I would appreciate any assistance you could give me.

Thank you,
Margaret

First thing is to uninstall/reinstall your audio.

Look in Programs and Features as your audio drivers are probably listed in there and you should unisntall from Programs and Features. The go to your system provider to find the latest audio driver download and reinstall
