Audio Service Not Running

I'm aware that there was a thread about this before, but reading it didn't solve my problem. After restarting my computer, I found that my audio service would not start. After investigating the services, I found that the Multimedia Class Scheduler service wouldn't start because of "Error 2 file not found". After researching, I found that a possible solution would be to replace my audiosrv.dll.
After doing that and restarting my computer, the Audio Endpoint Builder service did not start and under the description it read, "Failed To Read Description. Error Code: 1813". I could not find any information about this specific error so I felt my only option was to go to command prompt and type "sfc /scannow" for a system scan. It said that some files are corrupted but it could not do anything about it. The most relevant information I could find was this particular paragraph

Can some wizard out there decipher this message or am I forced to do a reinstall of Vista? If so, I'm screwed because my OS disk is missing.

Get into Control Panel, System, Device Manager and delete the offending sound device. Restart and see if normal sound returns

Offending sound device? Do you mean uninstall my speaker drivers? If so, that sounds like a bad idea but I'll give anything a try at this point.

don't know how or why but that made MMCSS work right. then i still had to do some tweaking so that windows audio ran as a local service. Thanks a lot.

So your sound is working properly now? If so, the reason for deleting a "corrupted" driver in the Device Manager allows Windows to reinstall the driver properly after restarting
