'Bad Image Checksum' Frozen Laptop

Hello, I'm new to this site, I just found it and wondered if anyone knew how to solve this problem I'm having with my laptop, as I'm at a dead end!

Basically it's a Dell laptop, when I turn it one it comes up with the Dell screen for a second, then the Windows XP screen, then it goes to a blue screen with the words

'STOP: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
The image shell32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum.'

And I can't get past that, the screen just stays like that and I can't change it.

If anyone could help I'd be extremely grateful!

Can you boot into safe mode? you can do that by pressing F8 once your computer POST's gets ready to boot windows.
