Batman: Arkham Knight Benchmarked, Performance Review

Well what a disappointment...after a few hours of us playing this game in my household. My computer is older and stays on 24/7 so I wanted a bit of an upgrade, but I also realize that mine is not top of the line for gaming and power use was important to me. Still I am running an overclocked i5-2500k with 8GB and a brand new GeForce GTX 960 and gaming with Steam and the game on an 840 Evo SSD. Well at least the new Batman came free for buying the video card. I have tried every setting and not only do I have to turn off Gameworks, I have to lower the settings and test to try to find a playable balance.

The in-game benchmark says my low FPS is about 57 and my high is in the 80s, but while playing the game itself it stutters and glitches terribly - right at the wrong moment; so much for the in-game benchmarks as it truly doesn't reflect the actual gameplay. I will say it looks amazing with all settings cranked up, but it is just not playable that way. I knew the 960 would limit me somewhat, but never dreamed I would actually have to turn the graphics settings down as far as I have. I mean I knew I was compromising not going with a 970 at least and it was a conscious choice for balance between power and efficiency , but I never dreamed I would have to compromise as much as I have for this game.

Playing with big picture steam, I have actually turned my resolution down from 1080p to 1280x768 on my big screen Gameworks off, No settings on high (using normal) just to get a barely playable game. Even the low settings didn't work well on 1080p but it is playable somewhat at 768. Hopefully new drivers and patches will fix some of these issues but I am not holding my breath.

On the plus side, Crysis 3, Farcry 3/4, Skyrim with hi-res, Titanfall, Dirt 3 and every other Steam and Origin game looks pretty amazing and the temps on my card are great using PrecisionX from Nvidia to control the fan speed.

Again, it was a nice addition to get this game free with the new video card, I just wish it was more playable without turning everything down so far and I would have to say I have been really disappointed so far.

Nvidia really are being a bunch of dicks about this GameWorks stuff, not allowing game developers to optimize the features for other GPUs (AMD/Intel). AMD didn't put any restrictions on their TressFX (Tombraider). I'm just reading up on this stuff now, and it seems like a really cheapshit way for Nvidia to screw over their competitors... and not just other competitors. Apparently Nvidia's older (non-Maxwell) GPUs are also having problems with GameWorks features. It's a bit hard to get a timeline on all this, as everything I'm reading and watching is dated from 1-6+ months ago, but if I'm getting this right... Nvidia is acting ridiculous.
