Blank screen on startup (Vista 32)

i've used 2 different graphix cards, and 2 different moniters, my computer shows the "no signal" blue box (as if the moniter isnt plugged in, but it is) the blank screen with the "no signal" begins just after the loading bar finishes. sound comes through as though windows has loaded just fine, the only way i can get in is through safe mode or uninstalling the graphix driver. i've tried installing archived drivers and up-to-date drivers, none work. I've also tried the CD that came with both graphix cards, that didnt resolve the problem either. before i post this there is one more random clue to this mistery problem... i cant go into sleep mode, it is grey and i cant click it. from start menue.

Have you tested the power supply?

boot vista in VGA mode and then change resolution to lowest, then reboot and pooof! it should work. It happens if you mess around with DVI adaptors when windows is on
