Blinking cursor in upper left-hand corner

My cursor blinks in upper left corner of monitor. Removed battery, replaced, did not work. What do I do now?

The hard drive is probably bad. This is a laptop? The blinking cursor means that the computer can't find a boot device, like a hard drive or CD/DVD drive
