Browser is being redirected to "IE cannot display webpage" or "addres is not valid" messages. After running TFC a couple of times I was finally able to go to the GMER and DDS downloads. No viruses detected on McAfee scan. This happened about a year ago too so hopefully it can be "cured" again. Thanks in advance!!

==== End Of File ===========================

I checked the previous thread you referred to and see the same search running:
FF - prefs.js: browser.search.defaulturl - hxxp://www.fastbrowsersearch.com/results/results.aspx?s=DEF&v=4&q=

Combofix removed numerous entries for this PUP a year ago! Broni also had you remove bad entries with script in Combofix Which you finally for through!

BUT>>>> all those entries are back!! The system look like it did before Broni started helping you. Have you used a flash drive between when he got the system last Dec. and now? Because it look like the same entries all over again.

Hi Bobbye,

I don't know how this keeps coming back aside from the fact that my kids use this pc so I can't be sure that they aren't using a flash drive. I really wish I knew why this keeps returning.

Do you suggest that I just run Combofix again?

Thanks Bobbye.

Before I forget about the light bulb that went off in my head: you had a problem running the script in Combofix previously and mentioned you had done a copy and paste from the email. Out of nowhere this afternoon, I realized what happened:

You get an email feed back when we reply. You can read the directions in the email, but that isn't the best way to do it. You don't act on the directions from the email. There is a link at the beginning of the feedback email that will take you right into your thread when you click on it.

Once in the thread, that's where you copy script from the code box! The formatting is important with the script and it's not correct in email..

And a note about 'redirect':
Browser is being redirected to "IE cannot display webpage" or "addres is not valid" messages
This is not really a search redirect. The message meant that for some reason, there is a problem bringing up a web page. It can be blocked or there is something wrong with the URL link or typed address. It is possible that the host files have been hijacked, but I'm not seeing that now. I have another member now with the same problem.

So yes, please follow this:
Please note: If you have previously run Combofix and it's still on the system, please uninstall it. Then download the current version and do the scan: Uninstall directions, if needed
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
--------------------------------------
Download Combofix from HERE or HEREhttp://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe and save to the desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.

Note 1:Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
Note 3: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
Note 4: CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Note 5: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.
====================================
And if you have kids using the system, I will make some suggestions for better security.

I'm going to start writing the script so I can make sure this 'stuff' is removed- or find out why it isn't!

Bobbye

Some of the removals:
1. Pocket Cloud: Wysebrowser.exe excessive CPU utilization >>
2. Upromise TurboSaver/upromisetoolbar >> About Upromise TurboSaver (remove only): the Upromise Toolbar also tracks users' behavior in detail. When a user checkes box promising "Personalized Offers," the Upromise Toolbar trackes and transmitts every page-view, every search, and every click, along with many entries into web forms. These transmissions included full credit card numbers -- grabbed out of merchants' HTTPS (SSL) secure communications, yet transmitted by Upromise in plain text, readable by anyone using a network monitor or other recording system.
3. Regrding Powder: This is a "Bit Torrent search engine, with P2P community sharing comments and ratings in discovering new media.."

Questions
Do you use the following or are they optional?
1. [Raagtx] C:\ProgramData\WebEx\WebEx\319\raagtx.exe >>WebEx offers collaboration solutions for online meetings, remote support, and webinars and online events.
2. Regarding Cybersearch:("c:\\Program Files\\3web\\3web.exe"=) loading from the Registry: Is this your ISP?
You may not have a choice but I came accross this comment I thought I'd share from DSL Reports

A security issue for the system is that there are 20 Active X Objects running. These are usually found in the Tools> Manage Addons section. I recommend that you open IE> Tools>Manage addons> look in both sections> 1. addons currently being used and 2. addons previously used> highlight as many in each category that are now enabled and disable them. You'll want to keep Java,

What are .cab files?
A cabinet (.cab) file is a library of compressed files stored as a single file.>> ActiveX control has the ability to execute local unsigned CAB files.
A malicious user can create an executable file, compress it into a cab file, and rename it to have a file extension of any type automatically displayed by the client. He can then send this file as an attachment to an Outlook user as well as some active scripting (eg: JavaScript, VBscript). To display the attachment, Outlook will save it in a temporary location on the system. This temporary location is usually the default, and is well-known (C:\windows\temp\, C:\winnt\temp, etc.). The active scripting can then execute the attachment on the target machine, using the Active Setup ActiveX.

Duplicate and tripilicate Active X entries:

I finally got to run the script from your post below but I may have sabotaged your hard work becauase when I couldn't access the Techspot website, I thought that the "virus" was blocking me from accessing the site so I copy/pasted the script from my e-mail out of desperation and then followed up with all of your reccommendations. SO - the first CFScript pasted below is from copy/pasting from your e-mail and the second CFScript posted below that is after running the script as copied below. SORRY for being such a nervous nelly but after reading about the Upromise TurboSaver program running on my computer I was very anxious to be rid of it!

Re *Questions*
Do you use the following or are they optional?
1. [Raagtx] C:\ProgramData\WebEx\WebEx\319\raagtx.exe >>WebEx offers collaboration solutions for online meetings, remote support, and webinars and online events. (I do sometimes participate in webinars so not sure if this is related)
2. Regarding Cybersearch"c:\\Program Files\\3web\\3web.exe"=) loading from the Registry: Is this your ISP? (Yes, this is our ISP but have been using them for over 10 years without too much problem so may switch in the future)You may not have a choice but I came accross this comment I thought I'd share from DSL Reports

Re Delete Ask Toolbar - was unable to do so and got an Error 1316.A "Network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\WINDOWS\Installer\AskToolbar.msi"

Re: uninstall Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.1.0 - this is the program that I bought and installed to make PDF files for work. I did go to the Adobe website and downloaded the patch available there but not comfortable uninstalling it at this time.

You can't paste script from email- the format is wrong.
No problem with WebEx and Cybersearch.

About Adobe:: My apology/my bad!
I see this so often Adobe Reader 7.0 that I missed you had the reader and the pro version. Pro v7 is an older version though so you might want to consider updating some time.

I should have suggested looking into the update for this instead of grouping it in with the Adobe Reader.
==================================
Browser is being redirected to "IE cannot display webpage" or "addres is not valid" messages.
This can be used if malware is running from a proxy:
Reset your browser proxies
  • For Firefox:
o Open Firefox, click on "Tools" then "Options" and then on "Advanced".
o Click on the "Network" tab, and then on the "Settings" button.
o Please make sure that the "No Proxy" option is selected.
  • For Internet Explorer:
    o Open Internet Explorer.
o Click on "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
o Click on the "Connections" tab and click the "Lan Settings" button at the bottom.
o Uncheck "Use a Proxy server for your LAN".
o Click Ok to close the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window.
o Click Ok to close the Internet Options window.
===================================
I note Superantispyware on the system. Please update and run a scan with it. Be sure to check the line to remove entries found.

When HijackThis runs, it makes a backup in case an entry needs to be restore. You have put HJT in a temp directory instead, so I will not have you remove anything:
C:\DOCUME~1\Shonna\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX02.421\HijackThis.exe

To set up the Directory for HijackThis:

Right click Taskbar> Explore> My Computer> Local Drive (C)> File> New> Folder> Name folder Hijackthis
Exit Explorer

Click on 'Extract all files'> Extraction Wizard> Click on Browse to right of dialogue box that says 'Select a folder'> Select C Drive> C:\HijackThis> next> Check 'Show extracted files'> Finish

Double click to run HijackThis.exe

Now you have set up a Directory for just HJT. Sound like a lot of work, but isn't can be done in 1 step but I thought this would be easier.
----------------------------------
There are 11 programs running that need only run if the programs is being used. None of these needed to start on boot, then run in the background.

There are 7 Services running that are most likely set to Automatic Startup. That means they start on boot and cause the related programs or entries to also start and run in the background. They can all be set to Manual Startup.

If you would like me to help you with this, please follow the direction to set up the Directory on the C Drive. They are all legitimate processes, but they are using resources that could better be applies elsewhere.
