Call of Duty's chart-topping run comes to an end

Bottom line: Amid Microsoft's ambition to turn Game Pass into gaming's dominant business model, one of its most valuable assets is showing signs of strain. Call of Duty, a $35 billion global franchise known for annual billion-dollar releases, appears to be in decline less than two years after Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

While Microsoft has not publicly disclosed performance figures for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, court filings from former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick paint a far less flattering picture. In documents submitted as part of the ongoing class-action lawsuit Sjunde Ap-Fonden v. Activision Blizzard et al., Kotick claims that franchise sales in 2025 fell 60 percent year over year. The assertion stands in stark contrast to Microsoft's public celebration of Black Ops 6 as "the biggest Call of Duty release ever."

Kotick attributes the downturn to a combination of intensified competition and shifting consumption habits driven by Microsoft's decision to integrate Call of Duty into Game Pass. The subscription service, which gives users day-one access to new releases for a recurring monthly fee, is widely viewed as a disruptive force across the gaming industry.

Players accustomed to paying $15 per month are far less likely to purchase a $70 title outright, a dynamic that may be eroding Call of Duty's retail sales even as its overall player base remains large.

Sony's data provides a rare external benchmark outside Microsoft's opaque financial reporting. On the PlayStation Store, Black Ops 7 failed to rank among the five most-downloaded games of 2025, breaking a decade-long streak in which the franchise reliably topped annual charts. For a brand that once defined premium console sales, the absence from the top tier is notable.

Microsoft's broader acquisition strategy has aimed to shift the company from product-first to service-first economics, using flagship franchises like Call of Duty to anchor subscription growth. The company has described this approach as a "conversion model," prioritizing long-term engagement and retention over one-time purchase revenue.

As Kotick's filing notes, this transformation is unfolding amid what he describes as "intense competition from titles like Battlefield," challenging the Federal Trade Commission's earlier assertion that Call of Duty lacked meaningful rivals in the first-person shooter market.

For Activision Blizzard, which stopped publishing detailed performance metrics after the merger, the full implications remain difficult to assess. Kotick adds that the company's actual operating results for 2024 and 2025 fell well below internal forecasts, although he acknowledges that similar shortfalls occurred during his own tenure.

Still, the apparent link between declining sales and Microsoft's Game Pass rollout underscores a central question facing the company's gaming strategy: can subscription revenue reliably replace blockbuster, upfront sales? For now, Call of Duty's trajectory suggests that even the most powerful brand in interactive entertainment is not immune to the shifting economics of digital distribution.

Like I said this a few months back it's the new trend where the new sequels for the gaming industry are selling significantly worse than their prequel counterparts. Who knew that even COD wasn't too big to fail!

Here is an idea use your marketing budget on human creativity and optimization instead!

I played COD 1 and had fun. I rarely if ever like sequels (recycled games) so I skipped all the other CODs. <<<
Due to a selfdestructing graphics card nasty conflict with my FORMER supplier I was forced to put my ancient GTX660 in my box. So I cannot play AAA games until I run into a bag o' cash..
But I'm not going to share that as I don't want to look like a loser. Oh oops.

I played Cod 2, 4 and WaW. After that the series started to go downhill but it was basically the game every parent bought their kids. I think now we are the the point where most kids have gamers as parents and it isn't the defacto buy every christmas/birthday.

Shame to hear about your GPU. I picked up a 3070 on facebook marketplace for $180 right after christmas so maybe that's an option for you. I still have my 6700XT in my main rig, but for $180 I couldn't leave that 3070 along. I remember my Asus 1080ti died during covid and I had to run a 1050 for almost 2 years until prices became reasonable again and I picked up my 6700XT for $320. These days I mostly just play EvE, ESO, Dwar Fortress and Rouge trader so my current setup is fine for those

If you change a game from being offered only on a cash for-sale basis, to also being available on a subscription basis, then of course revenues for the sales-only portion are going to change. That tells you nothing about the overall economics without also knowing the subscription impact. Generally companies that offer subscription plans do it because they know over time they make more from the ongoing subscription than the one-time sales.

Same issue for the Steam CCU chart. My understanding is that game pass users do not go through Steam's servers so aren't counted there.

I don't play Call of Duty and have no opinion about it's qualities as a game, I'm only reacting to what is in (and more importantly what is not in) the article.

Hah, similar to my woes. Right at the start of the mining bubble my RX Fury kicked the bucket and I was forced to get a RX 580 as a placeholder until prices normalised... Can't say they did but the RX 580 wasn't that bad at mining (during non gaming hours) so it farmed itself towards an RX 6700 XT replacement for £320.
Ironically I was annoyed having to pay £170 for an outdated RX580 but it mined about £150 of Ethereum and sold years later at a profit for £200 so it might actually be the best card I ever bought.

Microsoft might have burned itself buying activision blizzard.
It's all old franchises that are moving away from what fans expect/want.

To be expected from the "don't you guys have phones" company. I was hoping Microsoft could turn the tide as Activision Blizzard seemed insistent on digging its own hole deeper.
We'll see how it goes from here I guess.

Just give me a super gritty "world of StarCraft" with live action combat mechanics by the old writers, not whoever it is that's been writing for WoW the last decade.

I would play world of starcraft

Refreshing to read a bit of honesty on the forum..

What COD needs is next gen consoles, meaning a bump in graphics / a true next gen release.
Even with COD not doing too well, it still sell like crazy. I am not playing it tho.

BF6 is a bigger threat to COD this generation too. BF6 is the best BF in years + BO7 is one of the worst COD in man years = Bad for COD so this was expected

Competition is good, now we probably get a great COD next year.

COD focus is more on Warzone than the standalone too probably. Many people spend alot of money in Warzone. However COD has always been a console first title and aim assist felt like aimbot at times for this reason.

They highly prefered console players, might change with Microsoft now controlling it (and Xbox sales lower than ever) - We will see.

Given their need for 30% profit margin on Game Pass this bad news means the monthly fee will now need to rise again to keep that number...oh and Xboxes will need to go up another $100. MS have basically turned their consumer XBOX brand to dust in the last 2 years and consumer OS market is going the same way. Maybe they should abandon the home market all together and fully focus on the AI nobody is biting on?

We hoped Microsoft would get the acquisition to sort out ACTIVISION. Instead they didn't do anything. ACTIVISION uses cheating "content creators" year in, year out to promote each release. Many many people have the game as part of GamePass, and we refuse to play it. Why support companies, that don't look after the legit player base? Only if Microsoft does the right thing with ACTIVISION, we will come back, until then, there are far better games to play.

Kotick is beyond our of touch with reality in his wrist to avoid accountability. Blaming GamePass and competition for a 60% sales loss in a single year? That's delusional. When you completely sell out to streamers who make up the smallest percentage of your player base, use AI to create a monstrous chunk of your game, take a creative path that, frankly, makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, completely ignore the outcries from the majority of your player base, purposefully make your game HQ bloatware to deter players from playing other games due to hard drive consumption...I could go on for days with reasons why CoD is flailing for it's life and not one of them will coincide with Bobby Kotick's completely delusional pile of shenanigan excuses.

CoD series should have died a long time ago, even before Gamepass. I mean how many times are you going to play the same damn mechanics again and again? But kids with parents' credit cards keep pre-purchasing every year.

I wish to God I could design these games because I'd put them back on track. CoD MW 2019 was pretty good. Got it with my 3090 FTW3.

But the rest of these games have been boring since Black Ops 3. Advanced Warfare was good, but Infinite Warfare was silly.

Battlefield has far surpassed CoD and Battlefield 6's gunplay feels better than just about any CoD.

Another microsoft purchase going to vanish into obscurity. they are a disease in the gaming industry but somehow actually think they themselves are an amazing gaming brand. this just proves again that microsoft are a 1 trick pony and have no idea what they are doing in the gaming business. never seen so many company buyouts and company closures from a global brand in 4 decades.

I guess they are laughing tho when they look at the entire list of very important gaming ip's they've prized from developers hands. they literally own hundreds from mainstream modern games to classics spanning 30 years. so many creative geniuses have had to wave farewell to their lifes works, ideas, future ideas and gaming creations. because they succomb to buyout pressure, big fat payday greed and/or had no say in the matter.

microsoft doing to the games industry what they do in the business sector- if you cant beat them, buy them

then ask what happened? when those cash cows burn to the ground.

Still the #2 played game on consoles. Its numbers may have fallen off but its still the 2nd most played game.
CoD is so big that even when its down or "dead", its still being played by a lot.

Wait, you just payed $180 for only 16% more power but 4gb less ram?? Any you kept your 6700xt?

lol wut?
