Can I install a driver for a CD drive prior to updating to Windows 7?

I updated from vista 32 bit to 7 64 bit, there was an issue however. The computer kept crashing, i think it maybe due to driver conflict with the cd drive, because the cd drive only worked sporadically after the update. I installed vista once again, and am planning to try to install the driver for 64 bit 7 prior to installing 7, is this a resonable plan?

The problem was my computer kept crashing after i updated to 7, it was the blue screen of death.

CDs typically use generic Windows drivers tho there are things called "filter drivers" which might be installed by vendors.
