kimsland, what do you think about Alistair running either of these?

Policy: Rats Cheddar
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t110219.html

Download RatsCheddar.zip and save it to your desktop. It is a Policy Controller program written by Rathat to remove certain restrictions on XP systems often disabled by malware.

* Extract (unzip) the file to the desktop. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure.)
* Double-click on RatsCheddar.exe to launch the tool.
* Select Enable for everything listed, then click Exit.
* Restart your computer.
Warning: This program was developed for Windows XP ONLY. Do not run this program in any
other Operating System.
OR
FixPolicies.exe from Bill Castner:
Reply #25 here: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=31919&page=3

Download to your Desktop this self-extracting ZIP archive FixPolicies.exe

• Double-click FixPolicies.exe
• Click the Install button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
• The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies
• Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file named Fix_Policies.cmd
• A black box will briefly appear and then close. This will enable your Control Panel, Task Manager and stop any Administrative warnings.

i have a similar problem to alastair70. i cannot copy or cut any file or folder and not even text. any tips on how to fix this?

from what i read from your replies, i have service pack 2, and recenty i tried to install the installer of flv player and torant downloader but they didn't work so i deleted them... other than that, i did not install anything else in case installing is the problem

adelhamra, please start your own separate thread, giving your particular problems. I can tell you that using the torrent downloaded leaves you wide open for malware.

Alastair, please run the first program:
From kimland:
Here's the link I use for RatsCheddar made by Rathat
http://rathat.geekstogo.com/Applicat...atsCheddar.zip
Reboot and see if any of the functions are now available to you.

If they still aren't, go ahead and run the second program:
Fix Policies made by Alpha_Blue at bleepingcomputer here: http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/...ixpolicies.exe

Reboot. Try functions again. This should teel us where it is/was a policy issue.

ok i ended up running both programs ( with a reboot inbetween) to no avail. Still no change to any problem, except it is loading windows about 20 seconds faster on a reboot

Alastair, I think whatever problem you had originally was made worse by running programs you should not have run without supervision, then either removing entries or changing Services you should not have. So I am going to suggest the following steps.

1. Get into the Services however you can- Safe Mode is best: Cryptographic Services need to be set to Automatic. It's only Dependency is RPC- (Remote Procedure Call) which also needs to be set to Automatic. RPC default is auto and many functions require it running.
Reboot
2. Download and run the Windows Installer as suggested.
Reboot
3. Download or update the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ee-a3f9-4c13-9c99-220b62a191ee&displaylang=en
Reboot.

Try the functions now, Let me know if they are available,

I have know some users who try to streamline their systems and remove vital entries, or, in the case of Services, either disable a Service or a Dependency. I helped someone last year who had read what was actually a well written article about customizing Services. So he zapped a few butd totally overlooked the reference to Dependencies. He ended up in a similar state as you are in.

both services were set to auto in safemode, rebooted, tried to install win installer it won't let me, rebooted, tried VB but it wouldn't install either. Im thinking of putting the disk in another pc as a slave & formatting the disk & doing a clean install.
Just a point of note: I didn't change any services, i've used Combofix with great sucess in the past, and as i don't fully the HJT reports i have only removed what you told me to.

To the best of my knowledge combofix just removes deepseated viruses & malware.

If you can think of anything else to try before i thorw in the towel and format, i'd be grateful, however i think that we are both coming to the conclusion that a clean install will be the easiest solution to fixing all the problems in 1 go

Sorry, I can't think of anything else. Three of us have tried to resolve the problem. I wish you had come to us with the problem at the beginning or run the 3 programs in the steps we suggest.

Thank you for all of your help. I've slaved the drive and backed it up and done a clean install. I've installed XP SP3 with no problems, and it is now running better than ever. I've even found a copy of corel wordperfect which was the only reason i didn't just backup and format in the 1st place.Where can i learn more about Hijackthis logs?

Thanks again for all your time and efforts
Alastair

You're welcome.

RE: HijackThis logs: First off, keep in mind that MOST of the entries you see will be normal and legitimate entries. But you can find detailed descriptions here:
HijackThis Tutorial - How to use HijackThis to remove Browser Hijackers & Spyware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html

This has each numerical entry and description> in the table of Contents:
#11 is How to interpret the scan listings,
#12-#24 category entries

But it's important that you read #1 first> Warning on how to and how NOT to use this program.

Keep in mind that there is an orderly way for checking for malware and it's removal. Using HJ as a 'screening' tool is not recommended.
