Check out the weird, movie version of Sonic the Hedgehog

Having been in the early stages of development since 2014, the first poster for the Sonic movie arrived a couple of months ago. It showed a silhouette of what looked like some muscular, hairy legs, which was a bit unsettling. Now, advertising agency Hamagami / Carroll, Inc has posted the branding deck for the feature film. It’s since been taken down, but others have been sharing it.

The style guide for the movie’s merchandising notes that Sonic should be “a new modern take on the brand without abandoning its core essence.” The character is described as “Irreverent and sarcastic, heroic and adventurous, confident and competitive, chill and likable [and] mischievous but not malicious."

As was the case with December’s poster, there have been some issues raised with this design. One of the main points of contention is that Sonic’s famous white gloves are now just patches of white fur on his hands.

Making a ‘life-like’ version of Sonic was never going to be easy, though the upcoming Pokémon movie looks to have done a better job with Pikachu—Sonic appears to be encroaching on furry territory here. We’ll discover if this really is his final form when the movie arrives in cinemas on November 8, 2019.

Hmmm...so, let me get this straight...

-- the movie is supposed to be more "life-like" than "cartoonish" in its look;
-- Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog that talks
-- Sonic also looks nothing like a real-world hedgehog, but his design lends itself easily to a person wearing a suit at a convention or amusement park
-- by definition, "furries" are anthropomorphic creatures based on animals (real or imaginary)

So what wrong with him looking like a "furry"?

Sonic technically already is in Furry territory. He's an anthropomorphic hedgehog.

But sometimes making something look more realistic is not always the best option XD

There's a name for that - it's called the Uncanny Valley... It describes what you're talking about. If something looks more realistic than a cartoon or drawing, but not realistic enough to be believed then it's creepy. It's why the characters is Disney movies have such huge eyes etc - they want them purposely to NOT look too real, or they'll be weird.

In other similar news - did you see they're making a live-action Pokemon movie? Maybe Sonic didn't want to be left out.

Yup, I have known about the Pokemon movie for quiet someone time thanks to their marketing lol!

On a personal level, I have issues with the live action Sonic design. Hands should be gloves, not fur. His muzzle should be skin but it looks like it might be textured like fur.

I'll probably watch it. I will wait for the trailer though before making a decision. I don't think this Sonic looks that bad
