What just happened? China has created a deep-sea cable-cutting device capable of severing the world's most fortified underwater communication and power lines at depths of up to 4,000 meters. This technology, developed by the China Ship Scientific Research Centre and its State Key Laboratory of Deep-sea Manned Vehicles, targets armored steel, rubber, and polymer cables, which underpin 95 percent of global data transmission.

The device integrates seamlessly with China's advanced crewed and uncrewed submersibles, such as the Fendouzhe and Haidou series, marking a significant leap in underwater capabilities.

Initially intended for civilian applications like seabed mining and salvage operations, the tool's dual-use potential has raised concerns globally. Its ability to disrupt communication cables near strategic locations like Guam could have profound geopolitical implications, potentially triggering a widespread crisis.

The situation is particularly relevant given the US military's reliance on such infrastructure for its defense strategies. Recent incidents involving seabed communication lines, such as the suspected sabotage of undersea cables in the Baltic Sea, have heightened global awareness of these networks' vulnerability.

The development of this cutting tool has effectively overcome several technical challenges inherent to deep-sea environments. The team, led by engineer Hu Haolong, designed a titanium alloy shell with oil-compensated seals to withstand immense pressure and prevent implosion even during prolonged use. The device features a diamond-coated grinding wheel that spins at 1,600 rpm, capable of shattering steel-reinforced cables while minimizing disturbance to marine sediment. Its relatively low-power motor balances efficiency with the limited resources available on submersibles.

This technological advancement underscores China's expanding presence in undersea infrastructure. Beijing now operates the world's largest fleet of crewed and uncrewed submersibles, enabling access to the world's oceans. The potential for stealthy operation from remote platforms has sparked discussions within military research communities, which are acutely aware of the strategic implications of such technology.

Despite geopolitical tensions, Chinese scientists emphasized that the device's intended purpose is to support marine resource development. As nations increasingly focus on exploiting ocean resources, this technology will enhance China's capabilities in the blue economy and solidify its position as a maritime powerhouse. This goal aligns with China's broader objectives, including constructing a deep-sea 'space station' in the South China Sea, designed to accommodate extended stays for research and development purposes.

Furthermore, China's collaborations with other nations, such as the Cook Islands, reflect its growing influence in the marine economy. Both countries have committed to deepening cooperation in oceanic endeavors, focusing on sustainable development and economic growth through marine resources.

I don't see this as particularly dangerous considering China also has enough nuclear weapons to end the human race ready to go at a moments' notice. I can live with cable cutting. I can't live while being melted by a white hot flash.

I think you mean Xi's lap. Western greed created the Chinese dragon. The only thing anyone buys from Russia is petroleum products and its GDP is still pathetic.
Except in China, where Russian domestic products are popular and are increasingly more sought after. The market is huge and growing rapidly.

Our egos should not allow us to forget how massive and powerful these nations are, they are not to be pooh poohed away.
The West needs to keep an eye on China and its Russian allies. They've already made a fool of themselves by throwing money into Putin's lap, creating this dangerous dependency.
Public sentiment towards Russia in China is positive, where towards the US it is negative. Yes we have to be aware but not because they are foolish, lest we make fools of ourselves by underestimating them and their alliance.

Cable cutting doesn't destroy China. Nuclear weapons will. Its called M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction.

Ridiculous article. There's nothing new about cutting cables. And Western nations are the absolute WORST cable cutters.

"How Britain pioneered cable-cutting in World War One... The UK's most senior military officer has warned of a new threat posed by Russia to communications and internet cables that run under the sea.

But the reality is that an understanding of this threat is anything but new. And it is the UK which first pioneered the technique of cable-cutting just over a century ago.

At the outbreak of World War One, Britain had the most advanced undersea telegraph cable system. It wrapped around the world, due to the reach of the British Empire. The dominant position offered an opportunity and strategists were determined to make the most of it. But first, German cables had to be dealt with." - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-42367551

"China develops deep-sea cable-cutting device with global implications"

This is analogous to US blowing up Nord-stream 1 and 2 pipelines which also had global implications...!

Didn't they already have this capability? Just use an ROV to plant explosives on the cable and detonate it? I guess this new cable-cutting device is just a more graceful approach?

I.....would still take that over nuclear destruction.

Like that's not even close to the same thing.

Atomic bombs are currently used only as threats. When all sides possess them, none will dare use them due to the risk of mutual destruction, there are no winners. At the end of the day wars will be fought with missiles, troops and conventional weapons.

But Putin understands that most Western leaders are weak, which is why he leverages this rhetoric to mask his economic and conventional military shortcomings. It’s disgraceful how NATO, despite its immense power, behaves like a frightened mouse.

Love how it's technically for seabed mining, but conveniently also positioned to unplug half the planet’s internet like a grumpy IT guy with world domination ambitions.

The phrase “minimizing disturbance to marine sediment” sounds so peaceful for something that can straight-up kneecap global communications. It's like saying a ninja "gently inconveniences" people with his sword.

Bring the jobs back home and match them tariff for tariff and China's regime will implode. We're already seeing the first round of death throes..just gotta keep ratcheting up the pressure.

You can't have made at home and also have it cheap.

You can't have made at home and also have it cheap.
Certainly not with the hundreds of thousands of job-killing regulations that, regardless of intent, resulted in sending so many manufacturing facilities to Asia. Not to mention the ever-increasing minimum wage, or as it has been called lately, a Living wage.

If you believe what comes out from Trump and the US, yeah China is a bad country and purposely cutting cables.

But in reality they are actually doing what they are telling - doing research undersea.

And accidentally cutting the cables is just that - an accident during the research. Oops.

"device's intended purpose is to support marine resource development"

Sorry... how does a steel cable cutting angle grinder do that?
