Clearwire's 4G WiMAX network has made its way to the Big Apple -- albeit in a limited capacity. The rollout is nearing completion and the company said it has begun "operational readiness activities" in New York City, as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco. As part of that process, Clear is mailing offers to NYC residents who asked to be updated on the service.
Those "early adopters" are being offered a monthly rate of $35, which expires in two months and reverts to the standard $55 rate. Additionally, the first 20 customers (of a city with over eight million people) who bite on that deal will get a free WiMAX USB modem that toggles between 4G and 3G networks. That costs $115 on its own.
NYC is still listed as a "future Clear city" on the company's coverage map and while there's no official date for completion, it's safe to assume things will be up and running by the end of the year.
