There were some brilliant titles released for Nintendo’s GameCube, but one of the most fondly remembered was Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. The psychological horror was regarded as being ahead of its time, and fans have clamored for a chance to play it on a modern console. That wait could soon be over, after a Nintendo trademark filing hinted that it could be coming to the Switch.

Eternal Darkness is, of course, famous for its sanity meter and fourth wall breaking effects, such as the apparent deletion of saved games, fake blue screens of death, and the television appearing to turn itself off.

Last week, Nintendo submitted a request to renew the Eternal Darkness trademark. While the company could just be doing this to hang on to the name for any potential future use, the filing suggests the Silicon Knights game could be headed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch console.

Rather than being a full remake, it’s possible that the trademark renewal is connected to the rumor that the Nintendo Switch will play GameCube titles through the Virtual Console. The Wii, Wii U, and 3DS have all offered a Virtual Console service that allows games released on earlier Nintendo hardware to be downloaded, and the Switch could follow the same trend.

Eurogamer reports that the GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee have all been prepped for the Switch, with more games in the works. Adding cult classic Eternal Darkness  to the compelling Virtual Console service could help persuade some undecided consumers to buy Nintendo’s upcoming machine.

Eternal Darkness is the best Survival Horror game I've ever played, it was amazing and really scary.

I feel like we're being held in the dark on this one. The question we should ourselves though... Is it Eternal Darkness?
