Seattle police have arrested Jess Cliffe, co-creator of Valve’s incredibly popular Counter-Strike online shooter, over the alleged sexual exploitation of a child. Authorities have not released any further details, and Cliffe has not been charged with any crime at this time.

Seattle ABC affiliate KIRO-7 reports that jail records show Cliffe was booked at 1:17 a.m. into the King County Jail. No bond has been set, and a bail hearing is reportedly taking place later today.

ESPN writes that according to Washington state legislature, sexual exploitation of children "can include elements of commercial sexual abuse of a minor or 'depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit content,' such as creation, distribution or possession of depictions of child pornography."

Cliffe does not have a criminal history. The 36-year-old developer pleaded not guilty after being arrested on assault charges in 2013, which were dismissed later that year by a King County court.

A spokesperson for Valve, where Cliffe has been employed since 2003, told Kotaku that he had been suspended. "We are still learning details of what actually happened. Reports suggest he has been arrested for a felony offense. As such we have suspended his employment until we know more."

Cliffe and co-creator Minh Le began working on Counter-Strike, which was initially developed and released as a Half-Life mod, in 1999. The rights to the game, along with both the developers, were soon acquired by Valve. Le left in 2006 while Cliffe stayed at the company, where he also worked on Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Portal 2. His voice can be heard in Counter-Strike; phrases like “terrorists win” and "the bomb has been planted" are spoken by Cliffe.

Oh how the mighty continue to fall ....... so where are the laws that protect a person when the accuser lies?

If no charge??? Why is there going to be a bail hearing??? That does not make any sense.
If you get booked you are charged with something.

Then the article says "Reports suggest he has been arrested for a felony offense". That requires a charge. This article is not making sense.

"Child" or "teenager"? One is more severe than the other thus if it's the latter, it shouldn't be grouped together. Not enough details.

Also, this is ironic since a 25-year-old user was banned for 1000 years by the Counter Strike devs because he allegedly sexted with a 15-year-old.

They're called Libel laws. If you can prove someone lied, you can sue them for damages, pain / suffering, ect. No one is stopping anyone from using them.

WRONG! Libel laws do NOT protect a person under this scenario .... they are specific to the printed word and cannot be applied to speech under the 1st amendment. The point is that they current law is not equal. There have been more than a few careers ended because of an acquisition without merit or evidence. I am all for equal protection under the law but the key word is "equal".

"Libel is a method of defamation expressed by print, writing, pictures, signs, effigies, or any communication embodied in physical form that is injurious to a person's reputation, exposes a person to public hatred, contempt or ridicule, or injures a person in his/her business or profession."

"the Supreme Court held that in actions for libel involving private individuals and matters of purely private concern, presumed and punitive damages may be awarded on a lesser showing than actual malice. The Court determined that the First Amendment was not violated by permitting recovery of presumed and punitive damages without a showing of malice, as long as the defamatory statements do not involve issues of public concern."

Since the police have not stated who made the accusations and how, we don't have the full picture yet. That said, pretty much every form of communication falls under these laws.

You are not a lawyer and from what I can see, these people don't respond back with a lawsuit because they have no case.

Alright with you two done shooting the breeze, this article here may give more detail of what happened.

Surprisingly I don't buy cliffie statement when he said at the time I didn't know how old she was.
Aint no telling how many months or years have gone by for this to come up out of nowhere.
If there is a paper trail he won't be getting out of this, also it feels like that stanford university rape case.

From the article

"Zachary Wagnild, Cliffe's defense attorney, did not deny Cliffe's relationship with the minor, though he alleged that Cliffe was unaware of her age. Wagnild requested no bail for his client, saying that he isn't a flight risk."

It looks pretty bad but the details just aren't there yet. We don't even have the date of any of the times he contacted the minor.

Well, the world is massively overpopulated with supposedly, "politically correct", snowflake, SJWs. When you consider you can say rude things to them on the internet, and there have been suicides committed over such "atrocities", why in god's name would you think that anything more than the mere hint of scandal, or the slightest innuendo, would be required to end a man's career?

Women are perennial "victims", Rose McGowan is a has been, yet now she seems to be calling to tune that everyone in power has to dance to.

I grew up with the notion that, "a boy chases a girl until she catches him". That said, instead of these awful $10,000 designer gowns they wear to awards ceremonies to increase their "sex appeal", they should put the biddies in tuxedos and make them compete on desirability with men, on equal terms.

Everybody seems to have lost touch with the fact that Rose McGowan is an actress, who has been trained how to cry on command. Then when she does, everybody shakes their head in unison saying, "oh you poor dear".

Matt Lauer got fired, and then, "big surprise", a woman got his job.

Later that same scandal, a female co-worker of Lauer's said, "I had consensual sex with him, but he should be fired because he "used me".

And BTW, Sinead O'Connor famously said she shaved her head, not as a fashion statement, but to avoid "sexual harassment". Care to guess who's sporting a crew cut now? That's an easy one, Rose McGowan. It's all a victim act, from an actress, with all the attendant psychological props and ploys.

And I hate to be so cynical, but women never want to either believe, or admit, their honey pot loses value as they age. In spite of the fact that "sweet sixteen", now weighs 300 Lbs, and has an a** like Paul Bunyan's blue ox "Babe", she's still going to call the tune men have to dance to. So, the second hand ones are the worse deal of all. To get into bed with them, you need to promise to put a couple of someone else's kids through college, then look at her with unshaved legs, and without her "foundation garments".
