The 2026 budget is lower than 2025's, NASA's science budget was halved, and the NSF and DOE both received substantial cuts. Fortunately, Congress did not agree with Trump's funding proposal which would have slashed the budgets even further. Even so, we are losing many people out of the scientific workforce, and many of them are moving abroad.

You were gullibly gaslit again by bad reporting. The THG report was lifted from The Guardian, which used the NOAA category of "moderate drought" for the past year in compiling those figures. "Moderate drought", however, happens on average everywhere on the planet once every 5-10 years, and is defined by a percentage dip in rainfall .. no matter how high that rainfall is. According to this, the rainiest states in the country -- like Florida and Oregon, are in drought conditions.

Datacenters built in areas which actually are short of water almost invariably use closed-loop systems, and thus little water. And that aside, golf courses alone in the US consume several times as much water as do datacenters.

Not to mention the huge subdivisions around those golf courses that have huge lawns that probably consumer the same amount of water...BUILT IN THE DESERT AREAS of the southwest.

The only problem I have with AI data centers is WHERE they are being built. Middle of good rich farm land. They come along, find some about to retire age farmer, offer them money and the farmer has won the lottery. But then hundreds of thousands of acres of rich farm land are taken away from growing food. Same with solar farms. Wind, not as much. Considering the decay in the "rust belt" areas of the country that have no more manufacturing, since they were all shipped to China, how about building them there? Or, even better yet, how about building them in places where those that have been pushing them, (politicians, rich, wealthy etc) right next to their gated homes so they can put up with the noise when the backup generators are turned on or tested.

You think the tech/computer/investors are going to just say oh well, we wasted all this money and no one will let us build them here. Nope! The "authorities" in these studies are useless wastrels who never contributed a single thing to science -- but by the current standards of academia, anyone who stays in school the requisite period of time must be granted an advanced degree and MUST receive government funding to stay alive. These "studies" are an excuse to spend money and publish papers no one will ever read: you know it as well as I do.

Yes, and I'll commit an ad hominem fallacy against both of us - they know more than we do. I'll grant you that the funding method encourages paper pushing, and a friend of mine is leaving a national lab because he's fed up with it, but the funding cuts are not helping things, just encouraging the publishing of low hanging fruit to keep some limited funding.

I subscribed to Scientific American from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, but they became a far Left advocacy group long ago. Their "reporting" consists of a couple anecdotal accounts and an opt-in poll (useless for statistical purposes: these are the very definition of cherry-picked data) on researchers who were "considering" -- considering -- leaving the country due to Trump. We all know how many thousands of liberal celebrities made the same claims ... and never followed up on them.

The second part of their story deals with active attempts by foreign entities since the mid 2010s -- CCP China, India, and the EU -- to pay American researchers to emigrate. A concerning development, in fact, but an entirely distinct problem from your original claim.
