Cyberpunk 2077's online mode will have microtransactions

In brief: CD Projekt Red has earned its consumer-friendly reputation by putting out high-quality products like The Witcher 3 and avoiding aggressive microtransactions (MTX) in its singleplayer titles. However, it seems the company will compromise its values somewhat with Cyberpunk 2077's future online mode.

Though the base game will still be the same MTX-free experience it's always been touted as, Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer version will feature some form of monetization.

That's not exactly a surprise. CD Projekt Red is treating the online portion of Cyberpunk 2077 as a totally separate entity: it has its own development team, and so it does make sense that it would have its own monetization system.

However, that's not a cause for panic just yet. The singleplayer game will still have free and paid DLC, and though some modern "live services" feature aggressive monetization, including loot boxes, pay-to-win elements, and excessive grinding (designed to encourage the purchase of MTX), CD Projekt Red seems to be promising that it won't go down that road.

Of course, other AAA developers make similar promises and often fail to keep them, so some skepticism is certainly warranted here. Still, if there's one team that's earned at least a modicum of trust from the gaming community, it's CD Projekt Red.

Cyberpunk 2077's online component is expected to ship as an add-on to the base game sometime in 2022 (at the earliest). It was initially slated to launch before 2021, but we suspect that Covid-19, as well as Cyberpunk 2077's multiple delays, have both contributed to a later launch window.

Hopefully this doesn't mean they will do a rockstar and abandon any updates to single player because of the cash multilayer brings

To me it doesn't make sense how a $60 game with potential dlcs which will add more to the cost should have micro transactions. It sucks

Considering the MP isn't even planned to launch until 2022, I'm not the least bit worried.

The SP is supposed to have hundreds of hours of content for $60, so it looks like people are complaining without actually looking into things (again)...

Ok lets all calm down they said Separate Multiplayer Product !!! This isnt ea bethesda ubisoft konami. This game has no multiplayer or mtx and has 300 hours content and douchey entitled people still get pissed lol at 2020....... Cdpr are very capable of being the best gaming company with the best standards just like Interplay was in 90s.... Im not evan worried...game is worth 8 yr wait I know as I played it gunplay melee driving feel great game will be talked about for yrs to come period.....

It's another game, separate from Cyberpunk 2077. They are just calling it the multiplayer component of the single-player game because it's set in the same universe and it doesn't have a real name yet.

I also have a feeling this multiplayer game will be free. They made a stand-alone version of Gwent (which was a part of Witcher 3), free, with microtransactions, so I think this one will follow the same route.

You expect CDPR to not release any DLC in 2 years? You know MP will release in 2022. FYI, they already said DLC will be bigger than Witcher 3. And if you played that, then you know those two DLCs were long.

I find it amusing how the industry seems to apologise before putting in micro transactions. And the user base always outrages but then still spends the money.

It’s like “Oh come on CDPR, you know I can’t help myself!”

Just care about the SP game, could care less about MP. MTX all you want there, just keep it out of the SP and I have no beef.

Going down a rabbit hole here, this is all well and good but how long before some exec says

"Look at all this money we made just on the multiplayer, we could make 5x that much if we put it in the main game"

Worrisome I have 2 say.
