Diablo 2 remaster will reportedly arrive in Q4 2020

In a nutshell: The editor behind this new claim has a solid track record, having correctly predicted Diablo 4, Shadowlands and Overwatch 2 announcements before they were officially revealed. Vicarious Visions also worked on the PC port of Destiny 2 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, so there’s that.

When Blizzard Entertainment revealed in the summer of 2018 that it was working on multiple Diablo projects, fans of the franchise naturally speculated about what those games might be. It wouldn’t be long before we learned of a Diablo III collection destined for the Nintendo Switch. At BlizzCon that year, Blizzard shared information about a new Diablo mobile game.

Fans were upset, and understandably so. What everyone really wanted from BlizzCon 2018 was Diablo IV, not a mobile spin-off. That would come, albeit a year later at the 2019 convention.

Hope for an official Diablo II remaster remained high yet were seemingly dashed later that year when the game’s creators revealed that key elements of the Diablo 2 source code had been lost years ago during the final stages of development.

“It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a Diablo 2 remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone,” said Erich Schaefer. “They'd have to make them from scratch,” he added.

According to at least one source, Blizzard is apparently moving ahead with the project regardless.

French site Actugaming (per PC Gamer) claims a subsidiary of Activision called Vicarious Visions is working on a remaster that’ll launch in the fourth quarter of this year called Diablo 2 Resurrected. The game could be delayed slightly due to current world events, the site warns, but seems confident enough in its sources to at least report on it.

I'm still playing the original (which works perfectly fine under W7-10). In widescreen too. Another "the remaster exists mainly to bump up the price of a 20 year old game rather than actually add anything of substance" cheap cash-in.

As good as D2 is, rather than wait for them to bungle another remaster, just play Grim Dawn. It's already out with a few expansions and has the same D2 vibe with modern graphics.

I looked into Grim Dawn just now. It's a game about 4 years old that seems pricey for being that old. At any rate, I would have bought it but I am going to wait for a sale. Hopefully I don't forget about it by then as it seems a nice alternative.

If blizzard has lost the source code, I have my doubts it will have the "feel" of the original D2. I'm also reserved about buying the same game twice. Then add on blizzard is not the same company it used to be. Hmm.

I'm not sure this is a good thing. I lost several years of my life to this game way back.

Geez that makes me feel old - that was about 2 decades ago.

I'm glad to see this. I would still enjoy D2 if Battle.net weren't infested with spammers and bots. Playing alongside actual people is what I look forward to when I log on.

This would be an opportunity to wipe the slate clean, and begin again.

Grim has no anti cheat....

And about the article I really doubt it's true. Even an announcement of a official remaster before the end of the year seems unlikely.

After the Warcraft 3: Reforged fiasco, I'll never buy into Blizzard train hype again. Fool me once, shame on you.
At this time, the only producer I still trust with my money is CDProjekt Red. I'm not paying S*itzzard another dime until they bring back the LAN, ladders, clans back "as they were" to Warcraft 3 (not gonna happen, they effed that game so bad nobody really cares anymore).
By the time Diablo II comes out, I'll be happy playing the CyberPunk 2077 masterpiece, and by the time Diablo IV comes out, I won't even care to install a demo, Diablo will have microtransactions.
I'm old enough to withstand the impulse buy which these greedy companies are betting nowadays: for an in-game item I won't pre-order.
More so: if your game has microtransactions (and it's not "free to play") I'm not buying it...
