DVD burner no Longer works

When i try to burn DVDs or CD i get errors. Most the times it says general error and that this might be caused by the disc, i have tryed multiple discs and still cannot get it to work. Iv tryed using Roxio, Nero, iTunes, Windows media player and none of these programs will burn anything, they all give errors. this started happen about a week ago, prior to that i had no problems at all, all my drivers for the burner is up to date, and all my programs are up to date as well.

my system is a dell XPS 400
Intell Pentium D dual core 3.2 ghz
2 gb of Ram
Windows XP Media Edition 2005
Drivers are: Philips DVD RW and Sony DVD Rom

Does the "Sony DVD Rom" have a CD burner? Will it allow you to burn a CD?

If the issue is isolated to the "Philips DVD RW", odds are the drive is just defective. They do fail, and it's not uncommon at all for it to occur.
