Dvr with satelite hookup

I bought a Toshiba model D-4 dvr recorder. I have a satelite dish hookup. According to the dvr manual I can only get up to channel 125 on recorder. Are most dvr's only able to recieve a set amount of channels? I did an auto scan making sure the signal was on cable and not air and it only scanned up to 125. I watch the majority of shows on the higher channels. Is there something I am missing to program all the higher channels? Thanks.
