Emachines 170 freezes at post

I have an old emachines 170 that has given me good service but has now started to play up.

Recently on boot up it could not find the CD_ROM but continued to boot into Windows.

Now it hangs at the POST and even pressing Del cannot get it to respond.

Any suggestions welcome.
