Hi there,

I just did an HJT log like I always do, deleted junk, restarted computer, logged on and BANG: explorer.exe won't start (can't see icons, task bar, can't right click desktop etc.)

So I go through task manager and run explorer.exe, it pops out for 1 second and then it disappears.

can someone please help me?

Here's an HJT Log

Check the Shell value for Winlogon in your registry. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
should show:

Shell REG_SZ explorer.exe

Or download this tool: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_FixLogon.zip (Note: Windows Xp fix)
This utility checks for the correct GINA value in the Registry and will allow you to restore it, if its incorrect.

If you have changed any of the Service start up modes, this could cause the problem:

Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Services> be sure 'Shell Hardware Detection' and 'Windows Management Instrumentation' are set to Automatic startup mode and the Services is started. Set the WMI Driver to Manual. Check the rest of the Services here for recommendations:

http://www.ss64.com/ntsyntax/services.html

'Shell Hardware Detection'
Used for the auto play of devices like memory cards, CD drives, etc. Also, set to automatic if you are experiencing problems with laptop docking stations. User Choice (mine is disabled)

'Windows Management Instrumentation'
This service is required if you want to see the Dependencies tab in service configuration and you want everything to go smoothly. Set to Manual or Automatic
