Facebook is losing younger users to newer, hipper platforms

People for years have been saying that Facebook is the social network for older people. Now, there may finally be some solid evidence to back up that theory.

Digital measurement firm eMarketer on Monday predicted that in 2018, the number of US Facebook users ages 11 and younger will decline by 9.3 percent while users between the ages of 12 and 17 and 18 to 24 will drop off 5.6 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively. That’s significant as it is the first time eMarketer has predicted a decline in US Facebook users across these age groups.

eMarketer said it expects Facebook to lose around two million users ages 24 and younger this year. Rather than simply migrate to Instagram as users have done in the past, eMarketer predicts some will jump ship to non-Facebook platforms.

In the 24-and-younger age group, eMarketer anticipates Instagram adding 1.6 million users this year and Snapchat tacking on an additional 1.9 million users in that same range.

Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer principal analyst, said Snapchat could eventually experience more growth in older age groups, since it’s redesigning its platform to be easier to use. The question, she added, will be whether younger users will still find Snapchat cool if more of their parents and grandparents are on it.

That’s the predicament Facebook is in, Williamson added.

My 3 kids (23, 20, and almost 18) all were/are snapchat kind of kids. They have always said facebook is for old people lol.

They have been losing popularity with the younger crowd since your mom could join

uhhhhh ..... well since mom died 40 years ago, that's a long time .... about the time that the adding machine was in it's heyday ..... LOL

This is FAKE NEWS.
There are kids using snapchat and other apps, yes, but there are no other apps that allow you to store/share photos or post in the manner Facebook does. It's like Aol Instant Messanger on steroids - not to mention instagram and Facebook's move towards video sharing - to compete with Youtube.

Facebook isn't going anywhere or suffering. It currently has 2.2 BILLION active users, which is nearly 1/3 of the world's population.

For quick communication, kids are going to use what their friends are using and that's Snapchat and Instagram for right now. But as QuantumPhysics mentions, if they want to do any sort of video/photo sharing, they have to jump back on Facebook and often do. I have nieces and nephews all over the country that post on Facebook yet still use Snapchat and Instagram too.

Oh man, I really must be getting old..:D I didn't think anything could ever be "hipper" than Facebook.

Oops! Wait a minute! Stop the presses! Why not a porn version called, "Junkbook".(y)

That would be a great place for all those genital selfies your iPhone puts you up to taking.

I'm just surprised Facebook had that long a gevity! Remember MySpace?

Ah @Shawn Knight , you were doing so well recently at not getting flagged for "click baiting", or, "fake news", until now. I feel your pain at these scurrilous accusations. Keep up the good work! :D (y)

Too much click bait, too much "old fogy" (politics), news and other stuff in the news feeds.
Kids just want to post selfies, chit chat. Plus, it's harder for them to keep their parents from
seeing what they do, if "everyone" is on FB.

I like my email account.. I can share photos with other people and even send them text... and likewise recieve...

So why do I need any commercial driven social media for that? All Zuckerberg wants is to make money from your data.

No thanks, I'm quite happy to be the grumpy old guy in this case... Even though I'm only 41...

In my generation the catch phrase was, "never trust anybody over thirty". So yeah, you're old...:D

One day YouTube, Twitter and Facebook will combine and be called:

Now I can feel better about not having been active on Facebook. It's not because I'm old but because I'm young and hip. Not that I'm on any of the newer platforms, but 10 years from now I'll just claim it's because I knew they wouldn't last.

Hmmm...could have sworn the minimum age that Facebook allowed for having an account was 13...so why do they have any users under that age?

One day, we will all realize that things do evolve in time... even after things like the pod tide challenge, Trump getting elected, etc...

Yeah you are just a kid...
