FBI agrees to help unlock iPhone and iPod in Arkansas murder case

“We’re not concerned about anything on that phone,”
Then unlock it for the court without having the FBI unlock it!

As much as I don't like the idea of them just unlocking a phone, I don't like the idea of murderers getting off on a lighter sentence, because not all evidence could be collected, more.
As much as I agree with this, for me the protection of civil liberties always should come before prosecution.

If I didn't commit any crimes why am I being treated like a criminal?

Because that's how it works. If you're a prime suspect in a murder they keep you in jail prior to your trial that determines your guilt. They don't just tell killers to please come back for your trial, and please don't commit any other crimes in the meantime. And looking into your private life after you've been indicted isn't 'treating you like a criminal' it's due process. If they find nothing, then you're cleared, which is what every truly innocent person would want.

For those bashing Apple, check this out... so now if there's even a hint that your phone has data pertinent to a trial, they'll be attempting to hack in.... Imagine if all they had to do was say "Apple, open sesame!".

Wonder what happened to innocent before proven guilty...

This is exactly how 'innocent until proven guilty' works. They're gathering evidence for the trial that will determine if these dudes are guilty. Somehow both you and yraz think having your texts read is equal to being treated like a convicted felon.

I still don't understand how searching your home/car/bank accounts with a warrant is acceptable in society, but reading texts off an iphone is some gross invasion of privacy that gets everyone all riled up.
The thing is (and I believe this may also be what a lot of these people are missing) is WITH A WARRANT. So long as the legally required search warrants are obtained the government can search anything from your laptop to your work office.

In other news, I'm under investigation for murder. The local police want to check my gun and see if it matches the bullet they found at the crime scene. But it's MY gun. Those police have no business taking my gun for a crime I didn't commit.
Not quite the same, I know. But it's the concept. A warrant is used to gather information to prove guilt or innocence

reboot wouldn't change a thing but a phone reset would. ;)
No.... If you have an iPhone/iPad/iPod, once you reboot it, you must use your passcode before you can use your fingerprint to unlock it....
So if u ever get arrested, and u were dumb enough to leave incriminating evidence on your I-device, just turn it off and you can't be forced to unlock it...

With probable cause, they can search you poop for drug balloons, if they have reason to believe you're a drug mule.

As far as the rest of the crap which is being constantly spouted here about individual liberty, this is the nonsense you get after abolishing the draft. People wander around with the delusion the entire governments were formed, just for them personally.

Even the liberal democrat JFK put that into perspective in no uncertain terms, "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country".

You don't think he said that because people WEREN'T asking what they could do for their country? While the US might have flaws, individual liberties are what personify your country... unfortunately, they take privacy rights away while leaving you the right to bear arms - not exactly a good choice...

Well, the American culture is at an all time level of decadence. To hear the people who come marching through this site, "search warrant" is a meaningless term, and everything the government does has to be cleared with them. As far as "individual liberties go, as far as, "I dun gotz my raghts" goes, that's a tail which long ago started wagging the dog. The poor dog has become in danger of dying. With or without a gun.

As far as JFK's original quote goes, it sort of sounded a klaxon as to the apathy of people's view torward the state, and their responsibility to it. In the 50+ years since, their attitudes have gotten markedly worse. They say things always get worse before they get better, I fear that may not the case with the US as a whole.

BTW, the only people whose "privacy rights" are being compromised here, are a murderer, and a terrorist cell. And any law abiding citizen with a lick of sense should be able to tell you, that crew, sacrificed their right to privacy, as soon as they started killing other people.

Do you mean factory reset?
nope... just turn it off, then turn it on again...
You can't use your fingerprint to unlock your iphone/ipad when you first turn it on - have to use your passcode once... so just turn off your iphone and no one can make you unlock it.... Of course, they can still hack in without you...
