#1 Plug everything you possibly can by Ethernet cables. Wifi is always going to be slower than Ethernet and will never be as reliable/solid/secure a connection. That's just a basic law of thermodynamics.

#3 You need only but run a single ethernet wire from one part of your house to another, add a switch to each line and you can run multiple devices.

I start with the FIOS gateway and then run 4 cables to different portions of my house...then add a multi port switch with enough ports for the smart TV, any computers any video game consoles and any other ethernet capable devices.

Smartphones and laptops can use the Wifi.
