Freescale shows 7-inch tablet reference design

Freescale has revealed a new tablet reference design that "combines the best attributes of smartphones and notebook PCs for the ideal blend of performance, portability and battery life." The company's "smartbook tablet" design will be available for partner evaluation next month.

On paper, the device is of an ultrathin form factor and weighs only 0.8lbs. It would feature a 7-inch (1024x600) touchscreen display, a 1GHz Freescale I.MX515 processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, HD video decoder hardware, and 4GB to 64GB of internal storage along with microSD support.

Other mentioned specs include an optional 3G module, support for a SIM card, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, a USB 2.0 port, audio in/out as well as a speaker and mic, a three-megapixel camera, a three-axis accelerometer and an ambient light sensor, and a 1900mAh battery.

Without an OEM onboard, the price is still up in the air, but Freescale is aiming for the $200 range -- a figure that seems too good to be true.

I agree, $200 is probably a pipe dream... Unless it's for the bare minimum no-frills, and everything you want in it is ala carte. Still, $200 seems unlikely (they DO need to make a profit somewhere along the way).

Still, if it's really low, I could see this being an interesting option for road warriors. I'd love having something that I could read books on, watch movies on, and use as a GPS in my rental car...
