Bottom line: In 2016 there were five Dem and two GOP "faithless". As a result Clinton lost five electoral votes and Trump lost two. All who could be punished were.
There was no organized conspiracy to overthrow the results from seven swing states, involving 80+ completely fake electors, and thereby overturn the entire election, as in 2020.
That was per a written plan by Trump lawyers, who envisioned him invoking the Insurrection Act to deal with the expected massive civil protests and, incidentally, bewildered folks like you saying "but they couldn't have cast those ballots!". Had Pence accepted those electors, as Trump badgered him relentlessly to do, it would be a fait accompli.
Arguing that creating and implementing a plan to overthrow our government is somehow OK if there's a chance it wouldn't have worked is... silly.
