*Stick away from 256MB videocards, they dont perform any better then a 128MB card
It won't hurt to have a lot of memory. Applications, operating systems and games (well I could have said just software) will get bigger in the future, I don't think it'll be long when 1 GB is minimum requirement for most games. Do you remember when you had a computer with 3583 bytes of memory for BASIC apps? I do. I still have it, and a 16 kB expansion module for it.*More then 512MBs of RAM really isnt nessary, nor beneficial, unless your gonna be doing 3D rendering (3D, not 2D)

I dont think it will be 1GB for a bit. Pretty sure there hasnt been a game yet with 512MB RAM as a requirment. Almost all are 256 however.
You can always add RAM later, when you may need it. Whats the point in buying it now when it costs twice as much for 1GB as it does 512MBs.
You may never even use more then 512MBs in the first place. Whenever I check how much RAM I have free its at least 100MBs. I will have a few Internet Explorer windows open, Photoshop, and Warcraft3, and never use more then 400MBs of RAM. Right now I have several background progies running, 5 IE windows, AIM and MSN messegner running and Im using (approx.) 287MBs. So it is nice to have more than 256MBs of RAM, however I dont think 1GB is really worth your money right now.

If you decide on getting 1GB of RAM, I'd suggestion buying them as paired RAM, that way they were tested together and are designed to operate well together.
Not that memory of different brands can't operate well together... just that it's like mixing an Energizer and a Duracel in a CD player... you just ain't supposed to.
