Gen Z is turning subscriptions into short-term rentals for shows, movies, and games

Gen X supported Wal Mart and Amazon
Gen X supported leasing cars
Gen X championed remaining in debt and constantly upgrading cars, homes, ece.
Gen X is now in charge of these companies that are enshitifying all the products we use today.

This is not a "gen Z" issue. This is a "people are not dumb enough to keep paying for garbage" issue.

Yes this has nothing to do with generations, that's just a misdirection so people have convenient scapegoats instead of looking at the rotten industry for what it is.

People are un-subbing because A) the content is garbage and B) what little good content there is keeps rotating to different services. When people are saving every buck, paying $50+ to maintain multiple streaming services for just a few shows cant be justified.

Why would I pay $40 for a blu ray when I can spend $5, stream two $40 blu rays worth of shows, then unsub?
Ladies and Gentlemen, we found a Gen Z among us....it explains everything!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

...how do we convert access into commitment?
You provide more value than purchasing the content once would provide. How is this even a question?

The implicit question here is insidious and damning, because in essence, what this person is asking is, "how do we get customers to treat a subscription like a permanent fixture in their lives, without giving them the assurance that it is permanent?" The goal is to make an ongoing subscription have the same kind of mental investment as a one-time purchase, because then the recurring revenue disappears into the background. They want the customer indebted to the company, for the "privilege" of having access, and to feel guilty for trying to leave.

That's not a relationship, that's a hostage negotation.
...Subscriptions and free-to-play have become the regular front door nowadays, but what happens after players come through that door is where the new business models lie. Season passes, in-world status, virtual goods… these are the new rules of monetization.
The whole point of streaming services is that you pay for access to the content, not for the content. Otherwise, you'd just be subscribed to the content. Assuming access goes away, when the subscription ends, that's called "renting".

Woah.....you sure got me there buddy. Keep it up, I'm sure blaming everything on the youth wont backfire on you like it did the Boomers!

Also not gen Z, but you know, points for effort.
Because it’s not 2006 and Blu rays don’t cost £40? 4K UHD discs are half that with regular being 5-10 new and basically nothing used
Arcane season 2 on 4k blu ray is $50 MSRP.
The Penguin season 1 is $25. No 4k version available.
Doctor Who 2024 is $27.50. Again no 4k

Anime is in the same boat, official blu ray prices for a season of one show range from $25-40 depending on how new and popular it is.

Movies can be a bit cheaper, if they are a few years old. Dune part 2 is $9.99, or $19 for the 4k version, you can rent it on Amazon for $3. Furiosa is $10, $20 for 4k. Inside out 2 is $33 for blu ray, $43k for 4k, and $3 to rent. OR you could blow $12, get the whole disney/pixar back catalog, watch them all, then unsub after a month.

$5-10 new is a pipe dream.

Arcane season 2 on 4k blu ray is $50 MSRP.
Is you’re buying discs MSRP you’re doing something wrong
The Penguin season 1 is $25. No 4k version available.
Amazon £35 UHD, 20 HD, 15 DVD, half those if you buy used. Also 25 =/= 40 like you claimed.
Doctor Who 2024 is $27.50. Again no 4k
Literally free on iPlayer. I’m sorry you live in a third world country that doesn’t get free DW.

Hiding behind official again?

On iTunes. You can literally buy Dune part 2 for £10 in 4K or the bundle for £15. Furiosa is £8 with a bundle for £15 in 4K, inside out 2 is £14 to buy or £20 for the bundle. Also isn’t Disney plus premium where you get the 4K and no ads like $20 now?
$5-10 new is a pipe dream.
If you buy DVDs it’s not

strawman argument. We are talking about the price media sells for, not how good your coupons are.

Also not the $5-10 like you claimed.

Your TV lolsince is $159 a year bud. Sorry your country doesnt know what the word "free" means.
Hiding behind official again?
Eh? Are you trying to quote the price of pirated blu rays or something? What even is this strawman argument you've made here?

Yes, the OFFICIAL price is the one used in this argument. If you're going to buy pirated media.....that's just plain ignorant.

That's cool, I can find deals too. All that is still way over the cheap introductory price for a month of a streaming service that gets you multiple titles at once. Which was the point of the argument, if you forgot.
Also isn’t Disney plus premium where you get the 4K and no ads like $20 now?
Dont know, dont see ads and dont subscribe to D+. Lrn 2 adblock.
If you buy DVDs it’s not
DVDs? We are talking about Blu Rays here sir. Did you forget your own argument? Here's a reminder, BTW:
Because it’s not 2006 and Blu rays don’t cost $40? 4K UHD discs are half that with regular being 5-10 new and basically nothing used
You claimed BLU RAYs were $5-10 new. Not DVDs.

That's only fair. They say what we buy is not ours, we rent how and what we like for as much as we need it.

strawman argument. We are talking about the price media sells for, not how good your coupons are.
Again no because discs never sell for MSRP, they’re always on “discount” or “sale” somewhere.
Also not the $5-10 like you claimed.
If you go used they are.
Your TV lolsince is $159 a year bud. Sorry your country doesnt know what the word "free" means.
Which is required for live TV, radio etc anyway and supports a variety of things.
Eh? Are you trying to quote the price of pirated blu rays or something? What even is this strawman argument you've made here?
No? Learn to read.
Yes, the OFFICIAL price is the one used in this argument. If you're going to buy pirated media.....that's just plain ignorant.
Which things never sell at. Go by the price you can actually buy something for.
That's cool, I can find deals too. All that is still way over the cheap introductory price for a month of a streaming service that gets you multiple titles at once. Which was the point of the argument, if you forgot.
Those aren’t deals they’re just the default standing prices
Dont know, dont see ads and dont subscribe to D+. Lrn 2 adblock.

You claimed BLU RAYs were $5-10 new. Not DVDs.
You’re using the price of ad supported or SD prices of subscription services so why not include DVDs? You can get Blu Rays for as low as 50p used.

iPlayer is BBC specific. I'm not sure that it could be accessed from anywhere where it is not authorized for that specific market even with a VPN.

DW is available on Disney+ in the US and Disney+ contributed funding to the most recent season's production.
Doctor Who 2024 is $27.50. Again no 4k
I borrowed DW 2024 from my local library on BR and I'm glad I did not outright buy it. I've seen nearly every single episode of DW that it is possible to see (not including the eipsodes that are still missing, of course.) After having seen it and knowing, somewhat, what your tastes are, I have to say that RTD, once again, has trashed it. In "Space Babies" he throws science out the window. Classic and most modern DW has always been scientifically accurate. And, spoilers - he's insisted on the Doctor being the last of the Time Lords - YET AGAIN. WTF? Steven Moffet fixed that mistake, yet RTD has done it again. IMO, that kills off potential story lines having to do with the Time Lords and is a mark of a writer that relies on dramatic effect to make their stories good rather than good writing. RTD has added all kinds of crap that would never have been in DW and, IMO, is unnecessary. To sum up what he has done, I'll say he made it "Woke." IMO, the sooner he leaves the show again, the better. Interestingly enough, there is an episode or two written by Steven Moffet which I thought were the only high points of the season. Those, IMO, are worth watching because the don't rely on the RTD plot gimmicks. TBH, there is one or two RTD written episodes that are reasonable, but the rest of the RTD written episodes are crap, IMO.

I agree with you on prices. The only way, IMO, to get around those prices is to wait a year or two before buying. I paid $40+ each for UHD Dune I and UHD Dune 2, and $40+ for UHD live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
