Hi there,

I've been directed to this forum after having some problems with my laptop.

Firstly, it just ran really slowly. Then, for no apparent reason, the screen kept turning off momentarily and I got an error message saying that the graphics driver(?) had stopped working but was recovered. If it wasn't recovered, I got a blue screen and it would restart (normally if I was lucky, otherwise, I had to do a few restarts).

My boyfriend had a look and seems to have resolved this issue but I won't hold my breath.

Now, I decided to do the 8 step removal steps but I cannot get Avast to run. When I open it, I get the message "The application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect."

How can I fix this please?

Anyway, would someone who knows what they're talking about please tell me what all of these logs mean and what to do with them, if anything?
Thank you

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

Other than my screen saver not working, I don't believe anything is wrong. The screen saver gets a message float around the screen saying that it needs a newer video card and something about 3D... Sorry, I can't remember it.

Anyway, the results you asked for :)

Oh, and don't worry, the boyfriend wont be touching it!

Your system to badly infused with the AskBar, the Torrent toolbar and Conduit toolbar. I am removing some of the entries below, but I will have you uninstall them also: First I move the Trojan:

Please download OTMovit by Old Timer and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    Code:
    :
    :Files
    C:\SWSETUP\AOLIMS\setup.exe
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Am I to do the windows scan thing? I couldn't work out whether it was you or an advert...

Questions:
Did you know that you have processes for 3 antivirus programs loading?
Avast
Symantec
Panda Process Protection Service

Did you previously use the Panda program? The Services is difficult to remove and often left over, but I can remove it.
Have you run the Norton Removal Toolhttp://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Let me know so I can include any left overs in script. There were also a couple of other entries missed in the first go round.

Hello, sorry for the delay, I work shifts.

No, I didn't know i had three.

I have now done the Nortan removal.

Thanks.

Please run this Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
[2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
[3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap'> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:Be sure to scroll down to include ALL lines.
Code:

Registry::

DDS::
mStart Page = hxxp://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=en_gb&c=81&bd=Pavilion&pf=laptop
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt . Please paste in your next reply.

Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only.' Check easch of ther following, if present:

O2 - BHO: Ask Toolbar BHO - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: SupportSoft RemoteAssist - SupportSoft, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Supportsoft\bin\ssrc.exe

Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."

Start> Run> type in services.msc> scroll down to each of the following and double click on each> Change the Startup type to Disabled> Stop the Services: :
Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler
LiveUpdate
PavPrSrv or PavShld
SupportSoft RemoteAssist

Exit Service

Panda Process Protection Service (PavPrSrv)
This is not a malware problem since this service from Panda is legit. However since you have uninstalled Panda, the service entry does not belong there anymore. It is not running. The entry for the driver just was not removed:
  • Start> Run> CMD> enter>
  • Type the following command, substituting the name of the service found above for the term servicename, and press Enter.

    sc delete PavPrSrv
  • If the deletion was successful, you'll see the following response
    [SC] DeleteService SUCCESS
  • Type Exit to close the command prompt

The last thing to do in CMD failed.

Avast doesn't work, nor does my screen saver - as mentioned before.
Otherwise, the laptop seems to be running fine :)

Okay, let's check the other problem.

What are you referring to here?
The last thing to do in CMD failed.

How does Avast not work? Has it ever worked? Is it a new download?

Tell me about the screen saver problem? Does it not come on at all? Does it not come on when it's suppose to? Has it even come up correctly? Have you check the setting in Control Panel> Display> Screen Saver tab? Have you coordinated it with the Power Options in the Control Panel?

Please run this Custom CFScript:
[*] Start> Run> CMD> enter>
[*] Type the following command, substituting the name of the service found above for the term servicename, and press Enter.

[*] If the deletion was successful, you'll see the following response
[SC] DeleteService SUCCESS
[*] Type Exit to close the command prompt
[/list]
======================================

This failed.

Avast comes up with an error message:
The application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log event for more detail.

The screen saver also comes up with an error message:
The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or one that's compatible with Direct3D.

Both Avast and the screen saver have worked before and unexpectedly stopped.

Regarding the screen saver:
The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or one that's compatible with Direct3D.
This is pretty clear- the screen saver you're trying to use is not compatible with the graphics card installed. If it's a new screen saver, it won't work with the graphics card that is on the system Please check this Microsoft site for information on this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb153256(v=vs.85).aspx
You can probably run a SS that isn't 3D.
=======================================
Regarding Avast:
The application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log event for more detail.
The easiest way to begin on this is to do an Error Check, aka chkdsk as follows:

Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
Select 'repair my computer'> then choose the Command Prompt> type in chkdsk /f c> (Note: there is a space after the word chkdsk before the /. It needs to be there)> Enter
Close the message that comes up and reboot. The error check will begin in a few seconds.

Let it complete. The time it will take is based on 1. how much data is on the system, and 2. whether you are doing the Error Checking as part of the routine maintenance. Be prepared for it to take a while. It's important to let if finish. It will reboot when through.

If that doesn't handle the side by side error, I'll have you copy the error for the rest of the information.
============================================
Regarding the failed Service removal:
Telling me it didn't work doesn't give me much to go on. The most likely reason may be the Service name itself. Try it using this name:
  • Start> Run> CMD> enter>
  • Type the following command then press Enter:

    sc delete PAVSHLD
  • If the deletion was successful, you'll see the following response
    [SC] DeleteService SUCCESS
  • Type Exit to close the command prompt

If it doesn't please, please tell me what is not working.
===========================================
I'm just curious- why is HijackThis deleted in Combofix? I'll have you remove the cleaning tools when we finish.
===========================================
The instructions for Combofix- and running the script tell you to disable the security so as not to interfere with the scan:
AV: avast! Antivirus *Enabled/Updated*
SP: avast! Antivirus *Enabled/Updated*
SP: Windows Defender *Enabled/Updated*

It was all running on the last scan.
=========================================
Do you have any idea what this is?
c:\windows\SETUP504B
It looks like it might be a driver for a camera, but I can't find anything else with the same date of 2/28/2011 in the log

.

I don't think I've made myself perfectly clear. My screen savers were working on the laptop up until a month ago - using the current setup and then stopped working for no apparent reason.

I'll do an error check and see what happens.

PAVSHLD doesn't work - it comes back with the message "Failed 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service"

I don't know why HiJack This is deleted. I've still got it...

Yes, the last one is a camera driver.

Addressing your issues:
1. Screen saver: Directly related to this issue:
I got an error message saying that the graphics driver(?) had stopped working but was recovered. If it wasn't recovered, I got a blue screen and it would restart (normally if I was lucky, otherwise, I had to do a few restarts).
My boyfriend had a look and seems to have resolved this issue but I won't hold my breath.

Go to the Device Manager. See if there are any errors. They show as
images
Look for the Graphics driver. Go to the manufacturer's site and see if there is a driver update available.

2. Error Check (chkdsk): Hopefully this will resolve the side-by-side error.

3. PAVSHLD isn't suppose to be working. You had 3 AV programs running. You have Avast as your AV program. From DDS heading:
AV: avast! Antivirus
SP: avast! Antivirus
SP: Windows Defender
When I went through log entries, I found process for Norton and Panda in addition to Avast. I advised you of this.If you want Panda instead of Avast, you will need to uninstall Avast and reinstall Panda> but not both! You can't run 2 AV programs. I had you remove the PavShld Service

4. HijackThis has to be saved to it's own directory. If it is not and is put in temp files, it will be deleted.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

[size=3]STEPS For Creating Folder[/size]

  1. 1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.
    2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

5. The camera drive is the setup file. Once it is installed, it can be removed. Sometimes the program will delete the setup when through, but once it's installed, you don't need the setup.
===================================
I think we have handled the malware problems. What you seem to have now are system problems. These can be better handled in the Windows OS Forum. So I'm going to have you remove the cleaning tools and suggest that if these system problems continue, that you start a new thread in that forum to get assistance.
Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    CF_Uninstall-1.jpg
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click "System Restore".
  • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
    [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
    [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Empty the Recycle Bin

You're welcome! The following will help keep you safe:

Tips for added security and safer browsing:
  1. Browser Security Settings: Custom is fine if the user did the settings. Mine are Custom. Default is okay too, but sometimes too restrictive.
This Tutorial will help guide you through Configuring Security Settings, Managing Active X Controls and other safety features: Make Internet Explorer safer.
  2. Have layered Security:
    • Antivirus Software(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
      [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
      [o]Avast Free Version

      [o]Avira Free
      [o]Avast Home
    • Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
      [o]Comodo
      [o]Zone Alarm
    • Antispyware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX. It places kill bits to stop bad Active X controls from being installed. Remember to update it regularly.
[o]Download ZonedOut and save to your desktop. this replaces IE/Spyad and manages the Zones in Internet explorer. This places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7 yet.
IE/Spyad is not longer being supported. If you have this on your system, you should replace it with the following program. Make sure your IE8 is Up-to-date before adding sites to your restricted zone.
Known issue: If you have "immunized" your computer with Spybot Search and Destroy, and use ZonedOut to "Remove All" restricted sites - ZonedOut will remove your trusted sites as well. Note that if you remove Spybot Search and Destroys Immunization the problem goes away...
    [o]Replace the Host Files
MVPS Hosts files This replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

[o]Check this site .Java Updates Stay current as most updates are for security. Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Reset Cookies to prevent Tracking Cookies:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List

  6. Practice Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.

Use a Site Advisor: I recommend this>The Web of Trust (WOT) add-on is a safe surfing tool for your browser. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.Your online email account – Google Mail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail is also protected.

Every time to do a search and the screen comes up with the sites, they will have the rating light. Green (2 shades), Amber/Yellow Caution, Red> not advised. A few sites haven't been rated and show as a blue flashlight. Give it a try- http://www.mywot.com/en/download
