In advance I would like to just like to say "thank you" to whoever is taking the time to read this (and hopefully help me with this issue).

The short version:
Google search results are being redirected and sometimes add links will pop up as new tabs. Also, my computer seems to run slower now. In fact, during the process of writing this post I have noticed that the process "plugin-container.exe" seems to be using all most all of my CPU. This all happened after I was infected with some sort of fake anti virus software called "antivir solution pro".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The detailed version:

I'll start from the beginning.

After visited a dangerous website (I actually know exactly what website did this to me. If you're interested I would be happy to give you the address.) The "windows is updating" message opened up briefly a few times and then all of a sudden I had what appeared to be a new anti virus software program installed and it was telling me that is was currently scanning or cleaning my computer of infections. The name was "antivir solution pro". Being unfamiliar with this I tried to use ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager, but I received a prompt that task manager was infected and could not be brought up. I then immediately powered down my PC and restarted it. After doing several things myself (to be honest I don't remember exactly what I did, but I know that one of the things was a system restore) I was able to apparently remove this software, at least it stopped coming up.

Immediately after this issue I ran both "spybot search and destroy" and "Ad-Aware" They both found many problems, as they always seem to do, and removed them. I then tried using the internet and found that I was getting adds which would pop up as new tabs in fire fox. I then ran spybot again and had new infections found which all contained the word "adbrite" in the file/description. I removed the issues and then began to search google for adbrite removal instructions or possible fixes for my computer. I then found that when I clicked on these links the browser was redirected away from the actual site to an add site. I was only able to actually go to these sites by copying and pasting the url into the browser from the google results page. This is basically where I am at now. And I have just noticed that a process called "plugin-container.exe" is using almost all of my CPU power.

If it's usefully, I noticed that when these adds pop up I get new entries in the history called go.php , findwhat.dll and othe similar entries. Interestingly enough, I seem to only have google search results redirected if I search for issues relating to my current infect, like search results for "adbrite" , "findwhat.dll" and others. Normal google links from unrelated issues like "cheese" do not get redirected.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have attached the requested logs. Please note that the log from gmer is filled mostly with results from a program called matlab (which I am not worried about). As such, the file size was so large that I had to zip it. I will also attach a version in which I have removed the matlab entries so that the files size is small enough at attach. I know you said you only want .txt and .log files attached so I am doing by best to accommodate.

Thanks again for your time.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Combo fix

I have attached the ComboFix.txt file. Thanks again for trying to help me.

You're welcome :)

How is redirection issue?

Unless you installed Viewpoint Manager knowledgeably...
Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove (Programs and Features in Vista), and...
Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player
* Viewpoint Toolbar
This program does not do anything bad such as deliver ads or spy on you, but it is considered foistware ("drive-by-install") as it is installed without your consent through programs like AOL, AIM, Compuserve, etc.

======================================================================

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Code:
File::
c:\windows\Vxagefedahemofi.dat
c:\windows\Yqame.bin
c:\windows\system32\drivers\zcvkh.sys
c:\windows\system32\6E8C023D1D.sys
c:\windows\ALCXMNTR.EXE
c:\docume~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\pfsvgae.sys

Driver::
pfsvgae

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\AlcxMonitor]
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
"DisableNotifications"=-

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

CFScript.gif

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt

Wow! By some sort of voodoo magic you seem to have resolved my redirecting issue. Thanks!

As for Viewpoint, I have uninstalled it.

Most importantly, I have run ComboFix again as per your instructions. Here is the next log file.

Good job :)

Delete your Combofix file, download fresh one and post new log.
Something is not clear yet.

Cool :)
Looks good now...

Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start>"Start search"]
Type in:
Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall"
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
Restart computer.

* Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
* Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

* Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
