Are you installing it through Windows updates, or you downloaded standalone file?

windows update. Im pretty sure it would give me the same message if I installed through the stanalone file. maybe Im downloading the wrong standalone though. any ideas?

service pack 3 setup error.

The core system file (kernel) used to start this computer is not a Microsoft Windows file. The service pack will not be installed. for more info, see knowledge base article q327101 at support.microsoft.com

Possible boot.ini file issue.

Download BootCheck.exe to your desktop.

  • Double click BootCheck.exe to run the check
  • When complete, a Notepad window will open with some text in it
  • Save the Notepad file to your desktop as BootCheck.txt
  • Copy the contents of BootCheck.txt and post it in your next reply

CMDCONS Folder exists!

Contents of C:\boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
UnsupportedDebug="do not select this" /debug
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (bootscreen)" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /KERNEL=kernel1.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Good :)

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit. This will open boot.ini file in Notepad.

You'll see what you just posted in your reply:

[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
UnsupportedDebug="do not select this" /debug

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Delete line in red.
Go File>Save.

Close Notepad.
Restart computer and try to install SP3 again.

Broni. You are the man. Thank you so much. My computer is up and running better than ever, and I finally was able to install XP SP3.

...but. now my problem is my cd/dvd drive and my USB ports. I cant get them to work. I posted a thread in the DEVICE section, but havent really gotten any replies. My USB ports dont really work except for when I use this one PNY 1GB flashdrive. NOTHING else works. Also, my cd/dvd drives dont work, (D:,E:) and dont read cds/dvds, but I can burn cds. I tried using Microsoft FixIt, but with no luck. Any ideas?

again, I appreciate everything you've done for me so far, and when I can, Im going to donate at least something to you. you're help is worth alot. I was about to throw this desktop away. but now, it has a glimmer of hope.

Good news :)

As for USB ports I'm not sure...

As for optical drives...

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

I was able to do the 3rd option, and the microsoft fixit, but it didnt work. When I go to device manager and try to click uninstall on any of the drives my computer freezes up and nothing can make it unfreeze unless I held down the power button.

any ideas?

Well....
