Google map apks and amazon fire 10 tablet

I am trying to use google maps on my amazon fire 10 tablet as a GPS. I have loaded the apk's and they are displayed in my list of files. However, I cannot open them. Can someone show me what to do from this point?

Someone told me to download google maps from amazon apps. The only maps I see are google meta maps and it will not download for me. Can someone tell me the exact place and name of the maps.

I did not know this but the maps are under the Utilities files. I tap it and maps appear and has a button for directions. I put in addresses and it displays the map and route. I tap the "go" arrow and it just spins. I am doing this in my house. Could it be that if I moved outside it would work?
